Would you eat chicken sausages that expired two days ago?

I just realised they expired on 29th July i.e. The use by date is 29th. They are heck's chicken chipolata sausages and have been in the fridge though out. They look and smell ok but I'm a vegetarian and have just recently started cooking meat for the kids so I don't really have a clue. And I don't want to try them myself. The kids are 7 and 5. What would you do?

They will probably be fine if they look ok and smell ok , I rarely look at dates once stuff is in my fridge . I wouldn’t eat chicken sausages anyway

AnnaQuayRules · 31/07/2026 11:05

If they smell ok then yes, I would

Livpool · 31/07/2026 14:19

Yep, if they are off you’ll smell it when you open the pack, and even more if your start cooking them

No no and no again. It’s not worth it.

ElizaSchuyler · 31/07/2026 14:22

Chicken ones, no way on earth would I.

fuzzwuss · 31/07/2026 14:23

yes if they smell fine.

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 31/07/2026 14:24

I would consider it if I were eating them myself, definitely wouldn’t give them to my children, their stomachs are a lot more sensitive than ours and I wouldn’t take the risk

Backawayfromthesausage · 31/07/2026 14:29

Nope. The bacteria can be there to poison you before it smells so rank you can detect it.

LadyBeatriceBeaHiggins · 31/07/2026 14:30

i would eat expired food myself if its eg a couple of days, but id never chance it with anyone else

pinkandwhiteroses · 31/07/2026 14:30

Yes, as long as they looked and smelt okay.

BigMartin · 31/07/2026 14:36

No, I wouldn’t but I am very risk averse when it comes to food. If they smell ok they are probably fine.

maddiemookins16mum · 31/07/2026 14:51

Sure would, with chips and beans.

BillieWiper · 31/07/2026 14:56

No. I'm very wary of both chicken and anything with minced meat being past it's date. The latter has more surface area for bacteria to reproduce as it can be all around each tiny piece of meat. Whereas a big lump of meat the bacteria may only be on the outside.

Clarinet1 · 31/07/2026 14:59

I wouldn’t - people with knowledge and expertise set those dates for a reason!

Most BBE dates are massively over-cautious (for obvious reasons).

SowWhatNow · 31/07/2026 15:16

Nopes!

But then again, I wouldn't eat chicken sausages even if they were in date either...

StarDolphins · 31/07/2026 15:18

I wouldn’t but don’t take any notice of me, I won’t even eat houmous on the day of its use by!

Onelifeonly · 31/07/2026 15:24

I'd use most things a couple of days past the use by date, but not uncooked chicken, especially if kids are going to eat them.

BertieBotts · 31/07/2026 15:37

I would smell them. Chicken absoultely reeks when it's off.

nextwrecks · 31/07/2026 15:38

I would eat the Heck ones as they’re quite processed so I think they’d be ok!

But “Use By” (which you would usually find on a meat product) is far stricter than “Best Before”. As I understand it, the first would suggest that there would be a health risk to consuming the product after that date whereas the second would mean there might be some change in taste/texture/appearance but the product would still be safe to eat after the date.

Yes, but companies are still super cautious about both. They have to be. Also, food doesn't follow a timetable - nothing automatically goes bad at midnight just because someone has written a specific date on it.

"If in doubt chuck it out"..that was our mantra when I worked in kitchens...

Funandnames · 31/07/2026 17:00

I want to say ‘no’ but yesterday I cooked up sausages that expired 2 days prior - smelled fine and I ate them. Delicious and I’m ok 😂

I have a very strong sense of smell though and trust it 😁

Imaribenaberry · 31/07/2026 17:01

No way as it’s chicken I wouldn’t risk it
