Tell me about your crafty hobbies...I'm after something new to try

I can sew, crochet (knitting gets me in a proper tangle though!), I tried scrap-booking as part of dd1's 18th...the book itself is pretty much unstarted even though the present was very much dd1. Erm, what else, I'm reasonably arty - paint peg dolls for work/friends.

Will try almost anything. I'm just not sure what's next 🤔

My son and I collect sea glass and then either make pictures out of it (just by placing the glass over the top) or fill decorative glasses with the glass and fairy lights. We live at the coast though.

my son and daughter both do diamond art. And I like to make lavender wreaths for doors.

I’ve done a few string art kits from The Range/Hobbycraft that were fun. You hammer nails into a flat piece of wood following a template then use coloured string to make the picture eg a flamingo or bumblebee.

Cross stitch - way easier than crochet & sewing, relatively small, you can take it anywhere, and the counting is quite meditative

Cross stitch, dress making, paint by numbers. My mum recently took up rag rugging after attending a random class on holiday. Ask around locally what’s on 😁

I am very keen to try pottery but just don’t have the space!

MagpiePi · 27/07/2026 17:55

I’d second cross stitch.

You can convert your own pictures for free online. I use Stitchfiddle.com or flosscross.com

I do marquetry. You can buy kits online, but I buy my own wood veneers and do my own thing. I even make marquetry greetings cards.

Also knit. I love cable knitting, so we all look like fishermen here!

I have been doing kinusaiga

-I used to do small cross stich and use them to make the front picture on Christmas cards
-Ditto can be made into Christmas tree decorations
-I live near the sea and about to try/start making some framed art work with what I've collected. I've found that B&M (and likely many other places) sell deeper, box frames which seem perfect for this.
-Not sure its a hobby, but I love trying different cuisines and cooking. I've attended many cooking classes over the years. Most can be learnt online via youtube now, but previously I've done a Thai cooking course, Indian, fermentation foods, North African cuisine and several fish specific classes at Billingsgate London (the cookery school is now closed).

My mum lives abroad and her local community centre runs multiple hobby type things through the year and she has also attend private classes elsewhere. Over the years, she has done the following:
-Lead light lamp making like tiffany lamps
-Bisque doll making
-Macramé which she uses to hang indoor plants in
-Latch hook rugs
-Pressing flowers to then make into small, framed pictures

Diamond dot painting for the win! I find it so therapeutic 🥰
Felting is great too especially if you like making things as gifts or to display in the home 🥰 www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/all-about-felting.html

My mother is into pottery and glass-fusing. I would prefer glass-blowing, but am yet to try that! We both like drawing and painting with watercolours, and I like gouache and oil. I am learning to spin wool for my knitting.

Oh, and I have learnt how to use a knitting machine this year!

lucysmam · 31/07/2026 16:24

I like the idea of glass fusing, so will look into that a bit more. And, pressing flowers appeals actually - I've seen some pretty pictures on Tik-Tok I'd like to have a go at.

Facebook showed me a tatting group earlier on as well - not a clue what I'd do with the end product but it looks relaxing so I might give that a whirl if I can find cheap supplies 🤔.

Another one I did for a while was making terrariums. I'd buy containers from charity shops, mainly glass but a few interesting ceramic ones. Bought the soil, little white stones, some moss and other bits. Sedums will readily re-grow from a leaf and you can quickly grow several from just 1 plant.

I mainly made them for me, but gave a few away as gifts and sold a few to friends.
