On holiday near wildfires - WTF to do?

We’re in Bordeaux, 40k from the fires. It’s really smoky, the sun is covered by smoke and it’s really quite scary. Have spoken to neighbours and they say the smoke is just being blown this way, we’re not in danger, but it’s horrible and scary.

What would you do??

Where is your Mum? I’m supposed to be flying out next week for work and second guessing it.

@Missohnoyoubetterdont

I'm hoping this is how I reply, I've no idea how to use mumsnet.. this is only my 3rd comment!

She's in Chalus, its a small town not to far away from limoges x

FFS, please read my post more carefully. If 90% were caused deliberately then those fires would not have started due to climate change - they were caused by someone maliciously starting them! Im not saying that climate change isnt happening. I'm saying that thankfully not all the fires were started due to cc

CC doesn’t cause the fires. But fire is enormously more likely to spread in the prolonged hot and dry conditions that cc creates.

I'm glad you are safe and on your way home.

My mum sent me a photo of the fires this morning, they are very close to her now and looks like its still spreading. I hope everyone out there stays safe x

The one near Chalus was put out by this afternoon. It was not part of the Bordeaux fires. We do not know what started this one.

KittyCorncrake · 31/07/2026 21:36

Still 19 in France including one close to Paris near Fontainbleaue

What??? That goes against everything I have read about the fires.

I wish people would think before they post and would say where they are/what location they are talking about.

Update: we’re home.

Bordeaux last night was absolutely fine. The air quality was much better, few folk were wearing masks, the airport bus has resumed, most people who were evacuated have returned home.

It felt like a completely different place than it did last Friday.

i think we were just really unlucky to arrive then.

Exactly. Totally irrelevant post.

How far were the flames from the house in the end?

About 6km.

Oh apologies I didnt realise people reading in the UK knew more than those who live there..

Apologies.. the thread was talking about fires from all over.. including mention of Spain. So considering the way the post went it is still relevant.

Chalus is nowhere near Bordeaux, that’s one. And the fire was so small it’s not even making appearance on the feux de forets app.

No, my thread was about the fires near Bordeaux.

No need to be so nasty and rude. The PP was merely trying to give information about other fires.

You had a lot of nice comments and good advice given to you when you first posted. Now you're back home and safe the least you could do is show some compassion to others who may be experiencing something similar to you. Get off your high horse.

I think that comment was from further back when someone suggested a certain area would be safe from fires and this poster said no, her mother lived there and there were fires. Or something like that.

Agree with the other posters, that was unnecessarily rude of you tbh.

Some of us DO live here.

In fact I am due to go look at a house literally down the road from the fire you mentioned next week.

It is hard to live in rural France without being near a forest somewhere. It is part of what we love about it.

Horrible, rude response, OP

AlleycatMarie · 01/08/2026 08:37

I’ve been following this thread and really felt for you @thetinsoldier . But your recent comment to another poster is really nasty and uncalled for. Yes, the poster was talking about another fire but it was relevant to the post. And even if not, there is no need for such nastiness. Especially when the poster was wishing you well.

LostNFoundSV · 01/08/2026 08:47

EvieBB · 31/07/2026 23:04

Agreed. I understand this would have been a highly stressful situation, to say the least, but no need to be rude.

thetinsoldier · 01/08/2026 08:49

Apologies, @Thedatathatdied. My post was rude and unnecessary. I’m sorry.

I realise that you were only trying to help, and I hope the fire close to your mum’s house is under control soon.

People don't have time to read the full thread which is pages long and they're just trying to help you. Have some patience and understanding and perhaps just ignore those irrelevant posts
