Struggling to accept my savings staying flat while the twins are small

Hi all, Im late 20’s married with twin toddlers.

I went back to work self employed this year and have managed to add to my savings. My finances look like this:

£50,000 invested
2026 pots topped up
£150,000 equity in my current home
£70,000 equity in another home (inheritance)
£320/ month added to SIPP

My monthly savings aren’t much due to me working part time so I can be with the twins whilst they’re small. The savings will basically just about keep my annual pots filled so I don’t need to touch the base £50k.

I feel abit down because for the next 2-3 years I won’t be adding to my overall savings at all- just keeping it the same

I know I’m very lucky to be stable, I have just been so used to adding to the net worth so it’s hard to accept this will be how it is for a few years atleast, is anyone else in this position?

Try visiting a food bank or something for a bit of perspective

Wellshellsbells · 11/07/2026 19:27

put your twins in Creche and go back to work full time then you can add to your savings

Runsaway · 11/07/2026 19:28

You really are out of touch.

potterspot · 11/07/2026 19:28

Do most people find it hard to increase savings when they are working p/t with toddlers? Yes.

🧐

Jcbsong · 11/07/2026 19:34

Must surely be a joke?

MidnightPatrol · 11/07/2026 19:34

If your financial position is so important you, why not put the toddlers in full time childcare and work more hours to add to it?

Many women do, it’s not an obligation to work part time while your children are small.

Gengha · 11/07/2026 19:35

Oh dear, you poor thing, only a quarter of a million behind you at such a young age. Not sure how you’ll cope, clearly destitution beckons.

More seriously, surely you must know how extraordinarily privileged you are? I barely had a pot to piss in when my kids were small, far less worry about my investment portfolio.

RayneDance · 11/07/2026 19:38

Op you are in a great position. What do you think is making you feel like your struggling ?

BacksToTheFuture · 11/07/2026 19:42

What does 2026 pots filled up mean?

I assume your job and life so far have brought you into much contact with the real world and it's inhabitants

Peakyblinder18 · 11/07/2026 22:35

@StatuesLove What did you expect when you had children?
You can't be at work while looking after them. Let alone save.
Didn't you and your partner do the maths while planning a family or was it an unplanned pregnancy?
Is it joint savings?

HortiGal · 11/07/2026 22:40

2nd post tonight from someone with plenty ££, this one as if she’s on the breadline and the other claiming she has got her herself in a great place , not that the inheritance and redundancy payment didn’t help.
Tone deaf

RazzleDazz1e · 11/07/2026 22:42

Think you’re a bit on the light side tbh- I don’t count equity in homes as savings, so you’re -220k from what you’ve listed.
