How old for a single bed?

For backstory, DS is 4.5, got his just before he was 4 but hes quite tall!

DD is 2.5. DH said to get her a single bed but the issue is, her room is small so it'd take most the space and we,d have to get rid of her chest of drawers to fit it (we have a 3 bed house and want to move and give her bigger room but cant right now)

I thought she could probably stay in a toddler size bed for a bit? I know DS friend same age as him is still in one that size! And she's only 2.5

But do I just get her one earlier? It would sacrifice the space in her room but her room isn't massive anyway they play all over the house not just 1 space x

Mine both went straight from a cot to a single bed, just before they were 2. I didn’t see the point in buying a toddler bed. But if your DD is still fine in the bed she’s got, there’s no rush to move her.

I'm assuming your choice is currently buy a toddler bed and mattress, sheets etc or buy a single bed and mattress, sheets etc.
DD went into a single bed at 2.4 and DS went in one at 2.1 (needed the cot for DD). They never had a toddler bed, didn't see the point of buying all the stuff for a small bed and then having to buy it all again a couple of years later for a single.

Costwise, a single bed is obviously more efficient. Unless you already have one from DS? It's not clear what he was sleeping in before he got his bed at 4.

What size is DS's room? If they have similar sleep habits, would 2 singles fit? Could you have a sleep room and a play room?

I would just do the single bed. My friends boy went straight into a double as he’s ridiculously tall but she said it was way easier if they needed to bed share too for any reason if he was ill etc
but otherwise you’ve got to buy a toddler bed then a single so might as well skip the toddler

Eldest was 5/6. Youngest was 3/4 (I can't remember exactly).

If you've already got the toddler bed, keep her in it for as long as possible.

If the choice is buy a toddler bed or buy a single, it's probably makes more financial sense to go straight to a single. Although I would be tempted to go toddler bed for a couple of years and then when she's old enough of those beds that has desk space etc underneath.

Or a mid-sleeper so you can swap her drawers for storage under the bed.

WisdomBiscuit · Yesterday 01:31

Why don’t you just get a bed with storage beneath it?

Mid sleeper beds are really only suitable from 4+ , not 2.5 . If you already have the toddler bed leave her in it as long as possible, if you haven’t then get a single . We had a toddler bed sized cot so ours were in the cot , then the bed version until about 4 and then went into doubles .

That's why I said put her in a toddler bed for a couple of years and then get a high/mid sleeper...

@NuffSaidSam sorry didn’t read the names on the two separate posts .

Look into shorty beds. They are like single beds but smaller.

WonderingAndOverthinking · Yesterday 06:59

Mine had an extendable bed from IKEA and used the mid size set up, it’s now in the largest form (same size as a single). Worth a look?

Foughties · Yesterday 07:29

Just keep the toddler bed for as long as possible. Dont sacrifice the space.

Newname26 · Yesterday 07:39

Both my kids went straight into a single bed. But in those circumstances I'd use a toddler bed or convert the cot if its a cot/bed for a few years until she's big enough for a midsleeper.

Space is the only real reason to buy a toddler bed. But given they are used for such a short time I'd look on the second hand market and get a new mattress for it.

Iocanepowder · Yesterday 07:41

My 2 year old went straight into a single bed as that is what we already had in the room. Though she still comes into bed with us anyway.

Issue is that you will still have the same space problem in another couple of years if you delay getting a single now, unless you’re moving to a bigger house.

Agree with suggestion above to get a bed with storage underneath.

Hi so ive found a single bed with 2 drawers under neath and in our bedroom i was thinking of upgrading our 2 drawer bedside table to a tall 4 drawer chest of drawers so this would solve getting rid of the dresser!

Shes in her cot with the side taken down as it was one you could convert so we havent spent money on a toddler bed! But she constantly wants to grt in our bed or ds bed for naps

So didnt know whether to take the plunge and just upgrade her to single bed?

It's realistically going to be a while until you move by the sounds of it so I would bite the bullet and get her a single bed.

IeatPotNoodles · Yesterday 07:56

Moved from a cot to a single floor bed. Then into a double after home renovations. She was 3. Great in case she was ill or couldn’t sleep, or husbands snoring got too much for me!

When we eventually move one day i hope the kids both have big enough rooms for double beds lol! That's an aim

I just find they like the floor space for playing. I rushed to a single and regretted it, there was no need. But it was a toddler cot bed and we took the sides off so no extra expense. Got a new quilt cover and marketed it as a grown up bed.
