You're going to a barbecue. What would you like to see? (Inspiration needed!)

I know how fab MN is at this sort of thing!

We're hosting a barbecue tomorrow and making shopping list tonight and shopping in the morning so anything that requires overnight marinating or slow cooking for hours is probably off!

There will be 10 people altogether (including us). No vegetarians or food restrictions so anything goes in that respect.

What would you hope to see?

My brain is a bit addled from the heat and work this week so I need some help 😬

As far as the bbq food is concerned, it's probably going to be the usual sausages, burgers and chicken drumsticks. I'm looking for inspiration for other stuff!

Thanks!

(We have a sainsburys and Lidl nearby. And a butcher for the meat.)

Ist a note as you mentioned drumsticks, you are best off cooking them through in the oven and then throwing them on the BBQ for a bit of charred flavour. If not, they're always burnt by the time they're fully cooked. Means you can prep them in advance too.

My favourite bbq foods. Lamb chops with teriyaki sauce. Rib eye steak. Meatballs (with chopped onion parskey cumin pepper and salt) marinated chicken wings. lamb shish. chicken shish. sausage/suchuk. halloumi. grilled pepper, mushroom and tomato. Side dishes : potato salad with fresh and dried mint- olive oil- lemon salt and pepper. garden salad. cacik (yoghurt with grated garlic and grated cucmber and olive oil and lemon dressing. Hummus that you can buy ready or make yourself with chickpeas and tahini make sure you have plenty of olive oil and dressing. We also like Pitta bread so we can add out meat to the pitta. Optional rice/salad or roasted potatoes. We also slice onions and mix with parsley for a meat side.

Attacked by flys in my garden today had to eat inside.
Id love it if you kept cold food inside the house.

Tomato basil and mozzarella salad
grain and rice salads with mango, avocado, pomegranate

leaves with a selection of dressing

cucumber salad

small steak, good quality sausage, marinade kebabs on sticks

i I won’t touch beef burgers, buns or chicken, too much risk

OneLimePombear · 11/07/2026 10:05

Vegetable skewers.

istherereallytimeforallthat · 11/07/2026 10:14

Lamb chops.

Chicken and chorizo kebabs.

Pineapple rings - they are nice on the barbecue.

I would have suggested peppered mackerel fillets, but not at the gobsmackingly expensive £££££ price they are at now.

Home-made coleslaw.

Like a pp said - plastic cheese slices.

As many different condiments you can get your hands on.

Courgette, feta and lemon salad with optional fresh chillies.
Use potato peeler to very finely slice courgettes into long ribbons.
Make a dressing using lemon juice, lemon zest olive oil and seasoning.
Dice feta into small cubes.
Mix ingredients.
if using fresh chillies dice finely and add.
Very refreshing.

I always enjoy fish or king prawns and love caponata which is great cold. Although tbh if someone else is cooking I’m happy with anything!

Scallops as well as King prawns

have fun!

Potato salad with horseradish and some fresh cream. Yummy

Maddy70 · 11/07/2026 10:27

I like a savoury rice or potato salad side

hellospring26 · 11/07/2026 12:59

Greek shoulder of lamb, pitta, Greek salad, gigantes beans, vine leaves.

way less faff than burger, sausage, chicken.

or char Sui pork with grilled pak Choi, rice salad with ginger, garlic, soy, spring onions.

sausage, chicken and burgers are a pain to cook and really don’t appeal.

duckandbird · 11/07/2026 13:02

I’m just here for the wine. 🥂

Fish.

So few people do fish on a BBQ but done right it's beautiful, keeps it nice and moist. Salmon works well, red snapper if you have a fishmonger. Wrap in tin foil, chuck it on, bingo. Then people can have surf n turf.
