Film Suggestions for 11 Year Old

EllieQ · Today 09:03

As the title says, I’m looking for films to watch with my 11 year old DD. I’m currently recovering from major surgery so will be off work for most of the summer holidays, but won’t be able to get out and do much. I’ve had the idea to have a ‘Film Club’ at home with snacks and popcorn, to give DD something to do that isn’t gaming or watching YouTube, and I can sit and watch with her. It’s been a stressful time and I want us to do something fun together.

I was thinking of 90s classics, teen films, that kind of thing, and I’m looking for suggestions. I feel like it’s a tricky age as some teen films might be a bit too old for her, but children’s films might feel too young.

DD is starting secondary school in September. She mostly watches Studio Ghibli films, enjoyed K-Pop Demon Hunters and The Addams Family, and we’re watching Doctor Who together. She’s not interested in Star Wars, Star Trek, or the Marvel films. We watched Project Hail Mary together and she enjoyed it, but found some sequences a bit scary. I’m not keen on the Indiana Jones films (some scary parts) or Back to the Future (some dodgy scenes with Biff and Marty’s mum in the first film).

So far I’ve got:

  • Jurassic Park (too scary?)
  • My Girl (traumatising)
  • The Parent Trap
  • Journey to the Centre of the Earth (with Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutchinson)
  • Jumanji (the original)
  • Freaky Friday
  • The Princess Bride
  • Now and Then

I was also thinking about films like Clueless, Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, but they might be too old for her. On the other hand, they could be an introduction into the trials of teenage life? She’s quite young for her age, and I worry that secondary school will be tough for her.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!

My daughters just turned 12 and loves the Goosebump movies. We just watched 1&2 at the weekend

Thanks, I didn’t even know they had made films from the Goosebumps books! I’ll add them to the list.

The new Jumanji films with The Rock are really good family films, unless you’ve already seen them

Mean Girls would be suitable I think

There is a Netflix one called To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before which was very good but I don’t know if she’s too young, it’s been a while since I saw it

Legally Blonde?

Hi @EllieQ ! Joining you from the other thread :)

My 11 year old boy has enjoyed:

  • bill and ted’s excellent adventure (there’s some risqué jokes, I took the view that he will hear worse at secondary so not too worried!)
  • Yellow submarine (I’m scouse and used it as gateway to general appreciation of Liverpool)
  • Bedknobs and broomsticks
  • Parent trap (modern)
  • Classic Disney and Pixar films (pretends he only watches them to please me, secretly enjoys them! Inside out especially was a good way to talk about emotional stuff, and mulan opened up a whole conversation about the sexism and the toxic manosphere)
  • Time bandits
  • Chronicles of narnia films

I’m trying to make a list of more stuff we can watch over the summer so hoping for more suggestions :)

the Ebola Holmes movies with Millie Bobbie Brown could be good
and maybe Ferris Bueller if you’re after a 90s classic

We’ve got Disney, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, plus the local library has DVDs to borrow, though I don’t know what type of films they have.

Omg love Parent Trap and Princess Bride! (See username)

How about stuff like action comedy? When my brother and I were kids, we loved stuff like the Beverly Hills Cop films.

Iocanepowder · Today 10:21

Oh and we also loved The Mask, Liar Liar and Ace Ventura Pet Detective as classic 90s films.

TigerRag · Today 10:21

Wonka (Amazon prime) has DD seen the live action versions of films like Mulan? Mufasa? They're all on Disney plus
