Staying a night. I’d love either a village/small town and shops and cafes or maybe some woods for walking or water to swim in wildly! I’m just staring over night but will have an afternoon and evening then the morning to myself

Do you know Warwick? Quite an overlooked smallish town- people go for the castle but there are a few independent shops and a museum with nice eating spots.
You can stay in The Market Square (Rose and Crown Rooms) very reasonably.
For open water swimming I really recommend Compton Verney surrounded by a stunning Capability Brown designed landscape. It's 10 minutes from Warwick, do check opening times though. Flexible options available at St. Nicholas' Park: A wide and deep stretch of the River Avon offering views of Warwick Castle in Warwick itself or visit The Saxon Mill pub. People often swim behind here.

Bradgate Park near Leicester looks to be halfway-ish. Its beautiful although no wild swimming - just paddling down at the Newton Linford end! Stay Newtown Linford / Woodhouse Eaves /Cropston.

This is a popular swimming spot in Staffordahire and not far from the M6 toll road. Not much accommodation nearby but Lichfield isn't far away and that has some hotels and lovely foodie spots.

I was just going to suggest Warwick, we have broken the journey from London to Manchester there a few times.
