Present for retiring colleague

My best friend at work is retiring, we don’t see each other out of work, just best pals there. She was also very supportive when my DM was dying recently.
So I’d like to get her something from me, we are getting her a work present too. Don’t want to overspend and look ridiculous in front of the others, so I was thinking around £20.
She likes gardening, and she’s retiring from health care, that’s about it really.

Garden centres sell national vouchers which she could spend in any nursery. Like a book token.

Something personal and practical for the garden. Pruners with her name or message.

Honestly, nobody needs personalised pruners!

OP you could get her a rose bush if she likes roses, pick one with a good name maybe?

WoodchipAnnie56 · 08/07/2026 07:56

A David Austen rose

This Emma Bridgewater tin is great for keeping packets of seeds https://www.temptationgifts.com/product/elite-greenhouse-tin-emma-bridgewater
But for a gift, I’d fill it with nice chocolates or hand cream

WoodchipAnnie56 · 08/07/2026 08:00

Have a look at Felco, they have some nice secateurs sets

A big pot then buy lots of more unusual herbs for her to plant in it such as borage, black basil, lemon verbena and don’t forget to buy a bag of suitable soil too

Wine, chocolate, a plant if you must. Anything else will be clutter for her to deal with that will eventually go to the charity shop.

Maybe a coffee card with the suggestion that the first coffee is on you if she wants to meet up in a few weeks? It would be nice to keep in touch after she retires. It’s quite a big change.

I think vouchers too- my mum is always very excited when she can go to the garden centre and choose something for her garden

CoCoJones26 · 08/07/2026 08:24

How about garden vouchers or a voucher for a local restaurant? Keep away from anything that could end up as clutter!

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/07/2026 06:12

Thanks all.
She’s moving house in the near future, so I don’t want to get her any clutter. I was going to get a plant but there doesn’t seem any point for the same reason.
A voucher doesn’t seem very thoughtful, but perhaps it’s best in the circumstances.

I’m retiring next week - I’d love it if I received a voucher for my local garden centre so I could choose my own plants.
