Halloumi - Battered/Breadcrumbed

A few weeks ago, I saw an ad for halloumi in, I think, breadcrumbs. Might have been batter, but I don’t think so. From Tesco. Looked a bit like plaice in breadcrumbs, not halloumi fries.

Cannot find it in my large local Tesco, and doesn’t seem to be available online either.

Has anyone seen it? Or know anywhere I could buy something similar? I’m wondering if Tesco were announcing a new product that hasn’t actually been on sale yet.

Go to Aldi. Buy the Halloumi burgers (4 in a pack usually near cheese). Go elsewhere and buy some eggs and a packet of panko breadcrumbs.
Beat an egg in a bowl.
Tip panko crumbs into another bowl.
Take a halloumi slice, dip in the egg. Drop in the breadcrumbs and turn to coat.

Heat some oil, or an airfryer. Fry halloumi until golden.

Tried the frozen section?

I’d rather coat the halloumi in sesame seeds and then fry in olive oil.

Soooo lovely.

I've made it from scratch, well not the halloumi, but adding the coating and cooked in the air fryer. Lovely and crispy, but its quite salty so I could only eat a few pieces. Most other recipes I make using the halloumi have it mixed into say a salad.

Try it fried with a drizzle of honey, chopped pistachios and pomegranate seeds. Much healthier and very tasty.

@Wishihadanalgorithm this sounds lovely, I'll try it. Thanks for the tip.

I once read somewhere that you can soak halloumi in water before coming to remove some of the saltiness. Never tried it.

Iv looked on my Tesco Work App for you and i cant find anything similar on there unfortunately.

Thanks, 7238SM.. I think halloumi fries are quite common, but I wanted the bigger product that looked like a fish.

Tried the frozen section?

There wasn’t anything on a search for home delivery. But thank you.

My Tesco has these as an option:

Take a look at this https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/323010725/?icid=ghsandapp_ghs_pdp_share

@7238SM if you find halloumi too salty try slicing it up and soaking in cold water it draws out some of the salt. Im a salt fiend and could eat a whole block of the stuff.

Thank you. I like salt on new potatoes and chips, but find SO many other foods too salty. Good tip about soaking it which I shall try, thanks.

likelysuspect · 07/07/2026 20:34

I think the advice is generally to soak it in milk

I dont like it when hallmoumi has a batter to it or a covering, you tend not to get such a big amount of halloumi in it
