Any idea what this fish symbol is? On ceramic pot, just won on a tombola stall!

Isn't it the artists 'signature' like a brand label type thing?

CornishCornetto · 07/07/2026 15:25

On pottery like that I’d guess it represents the potter who made it, they often charge little images into the clay as they can’t really sign their work like a painter would.

Clawdy · 07/07/2026 15:26

Just wondered if anyone had spotted the mark on something else.

Lovely mark. There's a clothing brand that uses similar. Can't think of the name. Very popular in norfolk

muddyford · 07/07/2026 15:30

The clothing brand is Weird Fish.

Weird Fish, sold in Go Outdoors etc.

KayFabe · 07/07/2026 15:31

Could the brand be Weird Fish, *mydogisagentleman"?

KayFabe · 07/07/2026 15:32

Lathemistress · 07/07/2026 15:33

The Christian symbol is a fish with flesh though, isn't it? Not bones showing.

Clawdy · 07/07/2026 15:41

Some really interesting answers here!

Yes, because in Ancient Greek it stands for (courtesy of Wikipedia):

ἸΧΘΥΣ is an acronym or acrostic[14] for "ησοῦς Χρῑστός Θεοῦ Υἱός Σωτήρ", which translates into English as "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Saviour".

It's the Greek word for fish and ichthys is the way it's usually transliterated. The link shows the very simple fish sign you can still see in the catacombs in Rome and other places where early Christians used it as a secret sign.

I was always intrigued by a similar symbol in the email signature of a work client.

His job title suggested he was quite high up at the UK arm of a Japanese electronics company yet he had a cartoon fish in his email sig. Unfortunately I didn't know him well enough to ask about it.

Clawdy · 07/07/2026 16:16

Interesting because the tombola stall was at a local school fair, and I think it’s a very religious little school.

It looks like the logo of the brand 'Weird Fish'?

Myoldbear · 07/07/2026 16:48

I don't think it's anything to do with Weird Fish as the skeleton may be similar, but it's not the same.

CornishCornetto · 07/07/2026 17:55

I’ve never seen a fish skeleton used as a Christian symbol though, it’s always the simple outline of a fish with flesh as shown above.
