Anyone else happy to buy takeaway coffee but not tea?

I don't know why, but I don't mind paying for a take away coffee when I am out but I wouldn't pay for tea in a garage/ costa etc

A cuppa tea when you are sitting down for breakfast or afternoon tea is different.

I just feel like I can make the tea exactly how I like at home and don't want to pay for it.

Any one else feel like that?

I'm with you on this if it's served in a disposable cup. I can tolerate the cardboard taste with coffee but it ruins the taste of tea!

I refuse to pay for weak milky tea. If I ask for the bag to be left in and for me to add the milk myself generally they say no and just make it the way they would like it. When I'm behind someone who has asked for a half caff three shot skinny whip oat banana with hot foam sprinkles and a dip and they get it - and all I'm asking for is a single tablespoon of milk instead of half a cup and I don't- pisses me right off.

I'm the opposite, I'm fussier with coffee than tea. I don't drink instant. I can drink tea strong or weak and although it seems like a waste to pay through the nose for hot water, tea bag and a drip of milk, I really only like coffee the way I make it.

I felt differently before I had an espresso maker at home. A cafe hot drink seems expensive when I can make it perfectly at home.

I hear you - for me I think it's that there's a level of skill and specialist equipment involved in making a cup of coffee from beans or grounds, and particularly to make speciality coffee like cappuccinos, even if I do have access to the equipment and raw materials at home or in the office (which lots of people don't) it doesn't feel all that egregious to pay a substantial profit margain for someone else to make it for me. Whereas with teabag tea in most takeaway cages all you get is a a teabag with water poured over it - no skill or anything special to it really. Rationally I get that they do still have to pay their rent and staff costs and overheads so they can't make a profit charging 50p, or whatever I instinctively feel the tea is 'worth' but I somehow would just rather even buy a cold drink than pay £2 for a tea bag and some hot water. Completely different of course if you have a sit down in a fancy tea room type situation, with loose leaf tea in a pot and nice china so on, that's a very different experience than a cuppa at home and therefore 'worth it'...

Bjorkdidit · 07/07/2026 14:23

Sometimes I just want tea, and it's usually cheaper.

Not so long ago I wanted a hot drink for the train home and coffee was around £4.50, which is ridiculous.

But tea was £3.10 I think so still stupid money for what you get but felt more reasonable. (yes I know they have overheads, it doesn't make it any better value for money to me and unfortunately I wasn't near a Greggs or McDonalds).

igelkott2026 · 07/07/2026 14:23

Yes. Tea needs to be in a china cup or it tastes yuck.

Unless I've just done a running race, in which case, tea is the manna of the gods whatever it comes in.

pontipinemum · 07/07/2026 14:50

Glad it isn't just me. Yes the taste of tea in a lot of take away cups is awful too. I don't like tea out of travel mugs, bar 1 porcelain one which I'd tolerate. But I'd drink coffee out of any of my cups.

I don’t like coffee so I only ever want tea (or a soft drink), and yes I really resent paying for tea, especially in Starbucks, Costa etc who charge £3-£4 for some hot water on a tea bag. If a friend suggests a meet up in one of those places, I try to persuade them to go somewhere else. I only buy tea if I’m also having a breakfast or cake in a cafe. I have a local sandwich shop that does a takeaway tea for £1. I don’t mind paying that.

HoraceCope · 07/07/2026 15:01

no, there are certain times i want tea when i am out, as long as they leave the bag in and dont make it milky

and i dont want UHT

i think there are others like me as they are more prepared now than they used to be

HoraceCope · 07/07/2026 15:01

i have complained in the past when they took the teabag out and it was so weak, i think i stunned them into giving me another bag!

AgnesX · 07/07/2026 15:05

I can dunk my own decent teabags and it really galls me to pay someone else to provide the hot water. Decent coffee requires a bit of effort especially some of the fancy ones eg capacito so I don't mind that.

parachutegirl · 07/07/2026 15:08

Same. I like my own tea (Yorkshire) and it always tastes crap from anywhere else. I also resent paying £3+ for a teabag and hot water - at least if i’m getting a bean to cup coffee it’s something I don’t have at home.

WeddingInvitation · 07/07/2026 15:11

Takeaway tea is often just vile - lukewarm water with either a bag waved over it or left to stew and plastic milk. I'll drink it if I'm absolutely freezing and that's the only warm drink on offer.

I drink gallons of tea at home and at work.

I rarely buy takeaway coffee - but if I do it's usually better than the tea on offer.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 07/07/2026 15:14

I have to be gasping for a cup of tea to consider having a takeaway one. I prefer tea to coffee, but I can drink coffee any way it comes so I'd always choose it over tea when I'm out and about.

A disappointing tea bothers me far more than a disappointing coffee does.

ManyATrueWord · 07/07/2026 15:21

Coffee when out is often a different bean from the one at home so a different experience even if it's still espresso.

Molm · 07/07/2026 18:17

If you go to the cafe at Leamington Spa train station and you ask the lady specially she will give you your tea in a china cup of which they still have a small collection. For this reason, I believe this to be the greatest train station in England.

Seawolves · 07/07/2026 18:19

Me, I don't trust other people to make a decent cup of tea so opt for coffee when out and about

thistimelastweek · 07/07/2026 18:22

I have very particular tea requirements that can't be trusted to a random environment.
