Copper IUD Removed 2 Years Ago - Irregular Cycle Since...

Hi,

I was hoping any of you lovely ladies have some advice for me. I'm 32F.

Before having the Copper IUD, my periods were like a German Train. Lasting 5 days and 25 days between cycles.

I had a copper coil fitted in February 2022 and my periods, again, were 5 days on a 25 day cycle but did fluctuate slightly between 24 - 26 days. Since having it inserted, my periods were a lot heavier. Which was expected when discussing it with my doctor.

I had the copper coil removed in August 2024 and my periods haven't been the same since. My flow is much, much lighter than before I had the coil in. It's so irregular, it can come anywhere between 21 - 29 days and lasts between 2-3 days max. (Its cheaper on the pocket) but it's been two years now and it hasn't gone back to normal. I'm not THAT old, so surely it can't be premenipause? I had my thyroid tested a year or two ago, so it can't be that. I'm not sure if this is common after removal? Should I see a doctor about it or? I don't want to bother them if there is a way I can fix it myself.

I want to try for a baby with my husband. For anyone who is currently experiencing this since having theirs removed, has it effected your chances of conceiving?

Am I no longer able to ovulate regularly, considering how short and light my periods are currently?

Did yours ever return to how they were pre-insertion of the copper IUD or is this just how it goes now?

I haven't paid much mind to it, as I thought it would return eventually. However, now we want to TTC, I'm not sure if I should be a little worried about it?

Any advice would be great! Thank you, much love! ❤️

The copper coil is a form of non-hormonal birth control, I think it technically falls under the barrier method. how we menstruate can change throughout our fertile years, so just because you had regular periods in 2022 prior to the copper coil doesn’t mean you’ll have regular periods all your pre-menopausal life.

Irregular menstrual cycles do not automatically mean you’re not ovulating, you can have irregular periods but have completely normal ovulatory cycles, so you still ovulate at each cycle, but at different times.

Your best bet is to get a few ovulation tests and track your ovulation.
