Anyone else exercising regularly but still feeling puffy and a bit soft?

I strength train twice a week, do yoga for 1 hour, walk on an incline for 2x 30 minutes and do a circuits class x 30 minutes. Also walk a lot. Diet is fairly good. Drink a lot. However, I feel puffy a lot and soft ? Makes sense?

Are you really pushing yourself with the exercise? Are you overweight?

PurpleCoo · 06/07/2026 18:51

How long have you been doing that regime for?

What's your BMI? Has your weight been stable of have you lost weight?

How old are you?

Are you progressing your weights and training regime?

Are you focusing on protein?

It may be that you need to lose weight and there is muscle underneath the softness/puffiness. Maybe you lost weight and have excess skin

I have a healthy BMI (well I did until a weekend away and TOTM!), I have been doing lots of weight training, but I still have flabby bits. I can see change though and my bingo wings are shrinking.

Also, are you exercising the right muscles?
For example, bingo wings get zapped quite quickly if you work on your triceps. Just working on your biceps won't do that.

Cut down on carbs and up the protein.

You're probably a lot firmer than you think.
Might you be eating too much protein?

But if you want to build muscle it's not about pushing your heart rate up. It's about progressive overload and pushing the weights you lift to the point of failure. Are you doing this? Are you working all the muscle groups properly? Are you doing weighted squats? Deadlifts? Tricep extensions for example?

Honestly, it just sounds like you live in a human body. Humans feel puffy and soft. Same age, bmi and diet here. To not feel soft I’d need to reach a body fat percentage that would be at best really unusual for a woman, and at worst very disordered.

So what I was told (and it’s really worked for me) is that as you get older (I’m late 30s) you should do strength training at least 3x a week to actually see some results. Once I changed my outlook and started doing it 4x a week I really saw improvement.

Yes all of them and going heavier each time

I exercise 5x a week. 1 hour yoga, 30 min Pilates, 1 hour of strength exercises. And then 2x a week I add a 30 min bike exercise. But I don’t want to loose any weight as I m 5ft2, and I weight 50kg. I’m only toning and strengthening so not sure if that’s what you want.

lovecotswoldsliving · 06/07/2026 21:13

I think you are being hard on yourself.
Being a bit soft can look very healthy. You have a female body.
i lost a lot of weight last year and am skinny and it’s not that attractive.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 06/07/2026 21:18

I lost a stone and a half and was really wobbly then it took me a year to feel firmer after hardcore training 4 days a week. I still have cellulite but my body is mainly toned . I nearly gave up honestly,it took so bloody long but stick with it. But by the way, soft bodies are beautiful too (I know that’s rich when I tried so hard to firm up, but just saying, youve done amazingly already so hope it’s not getting you down).

HeidiLite · 06/07/2026 21:23

if you are muscular but 'fluffy' then this means your body fat percentage is too high.

I am trying to imagine someone muscular and fluffy!

it really isn't that unusual to have strong muscles but high bodyfat, so the muscles are not visible. Google for bulk and cut photos to see what it looks like.

Yes, this is what I think

I've had to accept the training is not going to get the kind of body I'd like in an ideal world

The Main person in my friend circle who has that was a dancer in the past and she teaches now and does a punishing workout in the gym every day for about two hours

She doesn't eat much or not half as much as I would need to on her regime

She looks amazing and her legs are like steel they are so strong - she likes to tell us to feel them because they are so strong lol

Actually, everything about her is amazing

But yeah, she looks like a trained dancer because she basically is

I've known her go without food for a couple of days to fit in a spectacular outfit

That's just not who I am

so basically, are you sure you're being realistic?
