Switch to online grocery shopping

Hello, we currently do our main shop at Aldi (as it's the cheapest) with a top-up from Asda to get the stuff we can't get in Aldi. I think it would be cheaper to switch to a main online Asda shop as it would reduce impulse buying, allow easier searching for discounts and enable us to control total spend more easily. Has anyone made this switch and did you save money doing so?

We have 2 online food shops delivered each week. I definitely spend more if I actually go to the supermarket so online works best for and having 2 a week means everything is fresh and less waste.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 05/07/2026 13:16

No I spend more if I online shop because I have so long to browse before the shop comes and it costs delivery too which has gone up a lot this year.
I do like the convenience of not having to schlep round the supermarket though. When I do actually go now in person I tend to spend even less because being there makes me irritable!
Shopping online is bliss compared to the actual shop. 😂

TootyPahooty · 05/07/2026 13:17

Yes I think we would do two deliveries per week. My DH can't get past the idea that we would be switching to a more expensive supermarket and therefore it will surely result in higher food expenditure.

I find shopping i store cheaper as long as I stick to a list. The cheaper own brand products often aren't available to purchase online resulting in a basic shop costing more.

GladiatorsFan · 05/07/2026 13:19

Every so often I do a shop in Aldi and then cross check what the same shop would have cost with an online shop with Sainsbury’s. I cant control for quality of course, but don’t generally buy either the Basics or Taste the Difference.

The Aldi shop is never significantly cheaper, even less so when I account for the convenience to us of a weekly online shopping delivery. We have a Nectar card and menu plan, which both help.

thejelliclecats · 05/07/2026 13:20

I only shop in-store maybe twice a year when we're in the local "big town". Everything else is delivered. I can't say I've saved much money but it definitely saves a lot of time.

SuitcaseAndSecrets · 05/07/2026 13:20

I've done it years..( Sainsbury's/ Ocardo) spend much less because I'm not browsing isles). Im disabled so much easier.

cornflakecrunchie · 05/07/2026 13:22

I don't drive / don't go out a lot, & use Tesco grocery online for EVERYTHING! I even ordered a new watering can the other day & it crossed my mind that others might just get in the car & go down to B&Q to get a new one.. I get meds so I don't have to go to a chemists, etc..
The only downside as far as I can see is that I don't get off my fat ass to go & WALK!

Buynow · 05/07/2026 13:22

I've shopped online since it became available years ago. I've tried all the supermarkets and some are better than others. Currently using Sainsbury.

It removes the impulse buy almost entirely, unless you are very disciplined you will always be tempted in-store.
I have a delivery saver which reduces the delivery costs but if you don't do that you can usually get a cheaper slot by being flexible.
I have a delivery once a week and go to Lidl or Aldi in between, mainly to top up fresh fruit and veg. Also bread because none of the supermarkets deliver the very freshest bread. Everything else is fine. They will always take something back if you're not happy with the quality.

cornflakecrunchie · 05/07/2026 13:22

Oh & clubcard.. :-)

I have never found Aldi to be much cheaper. The packet sizes are often smaller and quality of a lot of the fruit is awful. I don’t eat meat but my partner thinks a lot of their meat is terrible too.

We use Tesco for our online deliveries.

superstar84 · 05/07/2026 13:27

We find that Tesco is much better for deliveries than Asda

instore id usually go to Asda but they always send short dated things and really strange subs so never use them for delivery anymore

Who do you bank with? I’m with Lloyds and each week they put one of the following one on cashback through the banking app: Morrisons 5-10%, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s 5-8% the money then goes back into my bank account. (Ditto loads of other shops etc on Lloyds cash back)

madamegazelle1 · 05/07/2026 13:41

Shopped in Aldi for the last 10 years and have had my first month of shopping delivery from Ocado- £20 off first shop and 3 months of unlimited free deliveries. Really impressed with the quality, price and no substitutions. I spend the same as Aldi or slightly less as dont buy extra stuff. Dislike Tesco even tho its close to me so wouldn't have considered delivery from them. Thinking there might be 3 or 4 non perishables I visit Aldi once a month for eg their big pack of purple toilet roll but overall v happy!

Middlemarch123 · 05/07/2026 13:42

I like Asda online, very reliable, always turn up during allocated times, friendly drivers. They do good offers too. Much better than Sainsbury’s and Tesco imho. And miles better than Morrisons, who often turned up with the wrong order, or the right order but a day late!

I use Top cashback and while it's not as good as this I do get £1 back on every shop

Rowgtfc72 · 05/07/2026 13:47

Use tesco online and have delivery saver.
Online let's me set up a list which I can add to my basket in one go of things I always order.
No browsing and accidental buying.

NimbleHiker · 05/07/2026 13:59

I do an online shop because i ended up buying crap that i don't need when i shopped in a supermarket. I did use to use asda but i have switched to sainsburys. When i got subs from asda they would be really random. I once had toilet roll subbed for arctic roll. I find the subs from sainsburys more sensible.

LBFseBrom · 05/07/2026 14:02

I've been online grocery (and other) shopping for many years and love it. I ring the changes with supermarkets and it's wonderful not to have to traipse around aisles with a trolley, I hated that. I am rarely disappointed with my delivery and on the odd occasion when something has gone wrong, I've immediately been refunded.
