How do you organise the clothes in your wardrobe ?

How do you order the clothes in your wardrobe/s?

I am not going to be working for three or four more months and have removed all my work clothes and put them in the kids' room. So what's left is -
jeans, skirts, tops, jackets, a few nice pairs of trousers etc. nothing very formal.

Do you start on the left with bottoms, tousers then, skirts then going up to tops and jackets? Or do you have different sections by thickness of material ? Do you have any whizzy system that you'd care to pass on please? Mine is just a mess.

Many thanks

I hang up as much as possible on non-slip hangers.
Left to right: dresses (folded in half, my hanging space is wide but not full length), skirts, short sleeve tops, long sleeve tops, cardigans, jackets, trousers.
Drawers: pjs+ vests, t-shirts, jeans and shorts, socks + underwear, knitwear, gym stuff.
I have packed away winter bits like coats, heavy knitwear and long sleeve dresses. Coats appropriate for summer and all footwear are downstairs in the coat cupboard.

I do trousers and dresses one side and nice tops the other.
All t shirts etc are in drawers

Left to right t shirts, shirts/blouses, jackets, trousers, skirts, dresses.

All in colour order from white to black.

Thanks everyone..Useful answers already. I hadn't thought of putting my jeans into drawers. Might have a ponder on that one.. This could get extra complicated! 😁

Jackets, tops that need to hang, casual trousers and skirts, (work trousers and skirts) along the short rail - each done by colour graduation. Dresses in a long hanging. Tops that can be folded (Marie Kondo style), jumpers and pjs all in drawers, with tops and jumpers also colour ordered. Sports gear and hoodies folded in a stack on a shelf. Underwear, socks etc in cubes in their drawer to keep different colours of tights, hiking v casual socks, everyday v Spanx etc sorted and kept organised. Shoes matched in pairs under the short rail in the wardrobe, with casual on the left and work on the right, heels at the back.

Thanks folk. I don't know why I do still keep putting t-shirts on hangers. Given that I rarely ever iron them, you're right I could be Marie Kwondoing them , putting them in the drawers which would mean more roon to see everythung currently squished in the wardrobes. Cheers :)

Following on from what everyone's said — the other thing that's helped me is admitting some clothes just don't need to be visible year-round. I do a proper seasonal swap: whatever's not relevant for the next few months goes in a bag under the bed or in the loft, so the wardrobe only ever holds what I'd actually reach for right now.
For what's left in the wardrobe itself, I do roughly: bottoms together, then skirts, then tops, then anything on a proper hanger like jackets/cardigans, left to right. Foldables (tees, jumpers, pjs) go in drawers, stacked upright so you can see everything instead of digging.
The bit that's actually changed things for me: I use an app called Fotoback that photographs and catalogues your clothes as you put them away, so I've got a running inventory of what I own instead of relying on memory (and buying the same navy jumper three times blush). Might be worth a look if you're doing a proper sort-out.

Dresses, skirts ,trousers, jumpers, long sleeve tops, short sleeve tops, sleeveless tops. Further sorted by colour.

I have dresses in one wardrobe and smart trousers, b!ouses/shirts and skirts in another. Undies, pjs and gym gear in drawers and t shirts, casual trousers and tops and jumpers on shelves.

I have winter clothes in the spare room wardrobe. Have summer dresses hung up in wardrobe in my room, also skirts, blouses, jeans, trousers folded over hangers. Underwear in a drawer, nightclothes in another drawer, tees and vests, shorts in another. Swim/gym stuff, leggings and tights, socks in another drawer. Summer dressing gown on back of door. My winter clothes are very bulky, thermals, four oodies, lots of trackie bottoms and sweatshirts. So before the winter I hang them out on the line to air.

DelphiniumBlue · 05/07/2026 20:18

I have a small hanging space for dresses, ( about 50cm) can't fit them all in there, so rotate on a seasonal/size basis.
I then have about 2 metres of hanging space for tops. longer tops eg shirts go on the top left, then other tops ( a few jumpers, a few sweatshirts, T-shirts which are in the "tops" category rather than T-shirts to go under things.
On the lower rail go all other T-shirts, indoor jackets, cardigans and trousers that need to be hung. Everything is on non-slip hangers, and clothes go back in the wardrobe on the right hand side of their section. So recently worn and liked clothes will be on the RHS, and things I haven't worn for a while will end up on the left.
I have shelves within the wardrobe for jeans and holiday stuff like swimming costumes, washbag, hammas towel. I have 2 long drawers for underwear which have fabric organiser boxes inside, so that I can sort into different types of pants, socks, tights and bras.
Leggings, footless tights and vests go in another drawer,( also divided) and nightdresses and joggers in the last drawer. Slips and belts hang up on hooks inside the wardrobe drawers, and a few long necklaces hang on the wardrobe handles.
I have space under the bed for things that are out of season or too big/small ( though I've now got rid of the smallest sizes on the basis that if I ever fit back into them I'll want to buy new.
As for jewellery, I have delicate chain necklaces hung up on a little board made for the job, and earrings go in a couple of ice cube trays placed inside a pretty box. I only wear silver.
Coats and bags go in the hall downstairs.
I really need to reduce what I have, it takes up far too much space.

I have a triple wardrobe. Double doors with rails and third door with shelves.

On the rail from left to right -
fancy/occasion dresses
A hanging belt/scarf tidy so it acts as a divider too
Short sleeve dresses - I put laundered dresses on the left of this section and select from the right. I might skip a dress of I don't want to wear what's 'next'
Long sleeved dresses - same laundry system as above
Skirts

I don't wear trousers (except hiking trousers)
Shelves. Top shelf - hiking trousers, folded and stacked, thermal under leggings for outdoor activities, the single pair of jeans I own
Middle shelf - outdoor activity mid and base layers. Folded and in stacks according to type (four piles)
Lower middle shelf - pure wool jumpers
Lower shelf - Top layers/hoodies/fleeces

Left drawer - socks organisers inside to sort by type
Middle drawer - tights and chub rub shoets
Right drawer - cardigans

Underwear, PJs, swimming costumes, t shirts and leggings, both everyday and gym wear kept in chest of drawers.

Out of season dresses and coats kept in but in wardrobe in spare room

In season coats in hallway
