How can we neatly finish exposed tile edges before guests arrive?

My lovely DH has been working so hard renovating our kitchen DIY.
He has fit tiles and most of them ended under the cupboards so he just fit them flush to those but the tiles that are exposed (not under a cupboard) he forgot to add the edging trim to them that he used on the sides/edges 😅
So the highest tile just has its raw unpainted edge showing. Obviously can't use the trim we have as it needed to go behind the tile.

We are having peopl round tomorrow evening and I really wanted it finished.

I found pencil tiles? But not sure if they are right/would fit and the ones in my local shop are £15.99 each for just 30cm and don't match (just plain white tiles)

Any ideas please?! DH said about just having a layer of caulk or silicone bit i don't think that would look right?

I am finding it hard to advise without a picture. Are these floor tiles or wall tiles?

I had edging in my bathroom, and had them redone so that the tiles just have their edge showing - it looks a lot better!

Paint the white bit of the tile that shows in the same colour as the tile.

Thats what we had, but it sits behind the tile as you lay it, so its too late!

It just looks so unfinished to me though :/

You can retro fit the tile edging quite often by carefully grinding out the tile cement under the exposed edge to a depth of a centimetre or so. A Dremel is ideal for this but you could do a small area with a knife or flat bladed tool. Then fit the strip and repack with a little more grout.

I expect there's some kind of tape you can buy and bodge it that looks v similar to the trim. I feel like this is something that sticks out like a sore thumb to you and no one else notices. Is it for example where the cooker hood is or is it in the middle of the room where nothing else is?

I would not be impressed if my dh did this and then expected me to live with it!! Ffs

We are having people round tomorrow evening and I really wanted it finished.
Trying to do a quick job now could end in disaster. Brazen it out and tell them that it's 90% done but needs finishing off.
You want your house done nicely for you for ever, not in a rush for others for one night.

Gottensomedraws · 05/07/2026 08:49

You cannot do it by tomorrow, and it doesn’t need to be rushed. Surely any normal person would understand if you said, ‘we are having some work done and it’s not quite finished yet’. In this situation as a guest I would give it exactly 2 seconds thought.

It’s not going to detract from a lovely evening.

I'm going to amend my advice slightly! These little finishing-off jobs tend to have a habit of not being done.
Definitely mention in front of the friends that DH is going to do it - it puts him in a corner and will ensure that it's done. Unless he wants ribbing about it for the next 20 years.Grin

He is human, he made a mistake. He has done a fantastic job of the tiles, the paint, the flooring, all sorts!
I'm not going to be mad at him for making a simple mistake when he has saved us thousands and spent time by doing it himself.

Wise words!.

I would paint the raw edge white/ similar to the tile as a temporary measure and do it properly when you can give it the time and attention it needs. Don't bodge it, your friends will still be impressed by the transformation.

Edge them with a thin mosaic band. Could look like an intended detail
