Amsterdam in two days, is it possible?

I would love to take my dd there for a special birthday as she is desperate to visit the Van Gogh museum. Do you think it’s possible to travel (Eurostar from London) and visit in two days? I wouldn’t want it to be too much of a rush but funds are definitely limited!

Of course? It’s very close indeed.

If you want to go to Anne Frank’s house book it in advance. Also suggest getting the Amsterdam card for great deals if you want to pack a lot in over a short time eg canal boat ride etc. it’s a great city - enjoy

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2026 13:00

Yes easily although I dont really remember much about my visit there 😂

bestcatlife · 04/07/2026 13:01

You could do it in 1 day if the museum was the only thing you wanted to do, it’s about 4 hours on the Eurostar so probably best staying overnight.

SamAylward · 04/07/2026 13:49

Yes. If you are in London, it's easier than getting to Scotland!

LlynTegid · 04/07/2026 13:51

Possible. You should book tickets for the Van Gogh museum in advance, and also the Rijksmuseum nearby (if you have any interest in art, you should do both).

If weekdays are an option, check if there are evening openings, as you could visit one in the evening and then the other the following day.

Ooh thanks.Should we stay anywhere particular if we are trying to get everything visited in 2 days/1 night?

Yes, well worth doing. You'll be able to see a lot of the city in that time. It's very walkable but public transport, especially the trams and metro, can also help you pack in more.
Have a wonderful time.

Where should we base ourself?

You can see lots, but all the major museums seem to release tickets in blocks to cover a certain amount of time (for the top few, 8 week blocks) so if you are not on the ball with the releases, it is very unlikely/impossible you would bag some. I booked to go with a week's notice in May and there was no way there would have been any tickets to be had for the main museums. There are also vendors such as GetYourGuide that bundle up tickets - looking at those, it actually said that "6,000 had been sold this month" which presumably indicates that website's quota.

So if you are set on a particular museum, possibly sort the tickets as the top priority.

You could base yourself anywhere that fits the budget but on the May trip I was surprised by the price of accommodation. Ended up staying close to the station in Haarlem, a very easy 15-20 mins away on the train into Centraal and also (if so inclined) had a bus then tram option that fitted with regional day travelcards. This halved the per-night accomm. tariff that would have been the norm in Amsterdam, but for a short period you may want to be more in the centre.

I did a day trip when I was at university- it was long day! I have also been for a weekend and saw loads.

TinyBlueDent · 04/07/2026 23:40

Stay in a hotel within walking distance of Centraal station so that you're straight off/on the Eurostar and not stressing about public transport before your return train.

Ibis Styles is my favourite budget chain. Cheerfully decorated and breakfast included, although the rooms tend to be small. I stayed at the one near the station years ago and would be happy to return. If you can book far ahead you'll get cheaper prices.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 06/07/2026 11:11

Thank you everyone. I will book the museum tickets first and then work from there probably. I’m also thinking later in the year, autumn time, could be a bit quieter.

Stayed on a boat on a canal a few years back and loved it. Everything is really easy to walk around and get to and its not too far from the airport either with loads of public transport options. We did Van Gogh, Anne Frank and I cant even remember the other things but there were many things to do and see but definitely book the tickets as soon as you can as they sell out months in advance.

sashh · 06/07/2026 15:23

I gave been for a weekend a couple of times. You can see a lot in two days so decide what you want to see.

There might be a bus trip that takes in a few sights.

Visit a diamond factory. You will not afford much but you will learn how to choose a diamond.

Celiathebanshee · 06/07/2026 15:33

I took my 16-year-old DD a couple of weeks ago, as a post-GCSE treat. We stayed 3 1/2 days but 2 would be fine. The Van Gogh museum was our main reason for choosing to go there and it was stunning (pre book!). We also enjoyed the street art museum, Ann Frank’s house (you need to book 6 weeks ahead or go on the website on a Tuesday morning for returns) and a canal tour. We did some other stuff too but you could definitely fit what have listed into 2 days. Have a great trip!
