Best Pill - 16dd - good skin

Dd (nearly) 16 needs to go on be pill as she has a boyfriend.

she currently has really good mental health and good skin.

I’m terrified that the pill will ruin both of these things and also pile on the weight.

Anyone here with a similar age daughter where the pill hasn’t been a problem- and if so what brand are they on please?

I will take her to the GP but i wanted to do some research first.

Any tips or advice please?

In the past my daughter and myself have been on a pill called Yasmin, we had no issues with it. Do not have the depo injection, there are so many long term side effects with it.

I think everyone reacts differently I got on best with the depo. I was on it between 18-26 no probs at all came off 2 years before planning to get pregnant, as had heard could take 18 months for it to get out of your system. Got pregnant straightaway when I wanted to. No skin issues, no weight gain. I have since been on the pill and copper coil and no issues with them either. If I had known how great the coil was I would have gone on it straightaway.

Depending on area, she may be offered a pill called Rigevidon (starting pill on our formulary). Most women find no adverse effects on skin and mood, but if she does there are many options to switch to.

She’s unlikely to be offered depo injection for starters, especially as a not quite 16 year old.

What does she want to use?

Thanks. I will avoid the Depo as I took it years ago and it took me 3 years to get my period back afterwards.

I will look at Yasmin thanks.

Why are you pushing this on her? She doesn’t need to go on the pill. Ever. Full stop. Why would you mess with her hormones like that?! Why can’t they use condoms? Allergy? The latex free ones are just fine. She is 16, it’s not for you to decide. If she wants the pill, the GP will decide what is suitable. She will have had lessons on types of contaception at school and can make her own mind up.

Oh and Depo has been linked to brain tumors. It was in the BBC this week. Nothing is risk free.

Believe me, I really really really really don’t want her to.
But she is nearly 16, not having sex yet (I don’t think), but it’s not an ideal world and if they do start having sex I know how irresponsible teens can be. If she were to get pregnant I’m sure that would make things a whole lot harder than taking the pill.

Hi OP, I think you’re being really sensible. Of course in an ideal world they would use condoms but I don’t know if anyone here remembers being a teenager with condoms but it’s easy to mess up and just think “it’ll be OK”. I wish my mum had been more proactive - I was sensible but would’ve liked to have had mum on board. I had the depo for 10 years and it was great because I didn’t have to think about remembering the pill everyday. I remember lots of my friends got the implant for the same reason

My dd1 takes microgynon like I did for many years.

I’m in my late 40s so teenage years were long ago. You remind me of my lovely mum, she was the one friends turned to when they felt they could not confide in their own parents. I congratulate you on a sensible and pragmatic approach. ❤️

RoseOliviaAu · 04/07/2026 16:53

I went on microgynon at that age and it was fine. My skin and mind stayed well. Desogestrel also worked if you prefer mini pill.

However it’s worth noting that everyone’s body is different so it will be a case of try it and see. She might be different from me at that age.
