Insurance for a 17 year old travelling with friends

DD is the youngest in her friendship group and has just finished 6th Form. They’re all off to Zante for a week’s holiday and getting travel insurance isn’t easy as she’s travelling as an ‘unaccompanied minor’. Does anyone know of any companies that can provide her with insurance?

Family cover which includes her, even though you aren't travelling? When my kids were teenagers we had an annual one which covered the kids if they weren't with us.
Has she got a GHIC card?

Whatever you go for be clear what it covers, DS had to pay extra for coverage for things like using a scooter, mountain hiking, whitewater rafting and stuff so check what her plans are and make sure they are covered.

Would the policy by invalidated if she travels with friends and not with us though? X

You can buy travel insurance for under 18 from the Post Office.

You'd have to check the policy.

I used Coverwise for my unaccompanied teen DC.

I got travel insurance for my 17 yr old nephew this week through Compare the market

Check the policy. My bank one covers children up to 23 who live with us, BUT only if we are travelling with them or they are travelling to stay with a close family member. If they have not got medical issues, then a travel insurance comparison website will let you buy travel insurance (you put their DOB in, so it knows they are 17) for less than a fiver. I sometimes get the annual one (not much more) and it auto-renews, a bit irritating, and and yes, I could maybe save a few quid (and it is literally a few quid) but it is SO easily forgotten, and you get so many Go-fund-me type situations where no insurance was taken. @AnchorWHAT gives good advice, some things are not covered, and scooters are so tempting for young people. GHIC also as @Wonderknicks says - it is free, long duration, so why not do it and save plenty of bother if an incident arises. And, I am sure there will be people who may say "if they are old enough to book a holiday, they are old enough to sort their own insurance" but actually it gets overlooked in the excitement of the trip (or they accidentally double insure !) I am almost ashamed to admit that I have fallen foul of the insurance thing aged 50 and having travelled to over 100 countries. Was insured by my bank account, but, on reading the small print, for a max of 31 days (was out for 34). Only realised on the flight, it is too late by then. Nothing happened, and all was well, but man, it preyed on my mind.

I’m no further forward. Comparison websites don’t let me proceed once I enter her DOB! They all say that she must be 18 .

Can they not get a policy together? The reason I say that is if something did happen it’s probably easier if they are all on the same policy.

then one person will be over 18 as well.

JumpingRabbit · 09/07/2026 07:01

It was years ago so maybe different now but when we went at 18, I was able to add a younger traveller (17) onto my policy. Could she get a joint policy with one of the other travellers?

DSs gf came with us last year at 17 and had her own insurance so definitely possible.

DallasMajor · 09/07/2026 07:04

LV (Liverpool Victoria) offer this but you have to ring them up. They can do it as a stand alone policy or as a family policy with the added benefit of unaccompanied travel.

Confused . Com let me add an under 18 to get quotes

katiemarnie · 09/07/2026 07:34

Direct Travel Insurance might work.

Did Coverwise not work? I used it last year when my DC was under 16.
