Is private schooling mainly an English thing, and what does it cost?

I’m from NI so the majority of children here attend public schools, I don’t know anyone that attends a private school at all. But I always read about them on mumsnet, is it mostly an English thing? And what sort of cost is it to send a child to a private school? Genuinely curious

Why would it be mostly an English thing? There are private schools all over the world. The majority of English children also go to public schools, I don’t know anyone personally who attends a private school.

Gardeningsideeffects · 03/07/2026 21:50

My kids attended private schools in Dublin. They are everywhere.

You can see the fees on their websites.

titchy · 03/07/2026 21:51

The majority of English parents send their kids to state school too! 93% in fact. The MN demographic is wealthier than most so more will be in private school than average.

It's all over the world - in London these days I think tends to cost upwards of £25k a year, can be less elsewhere.

I don’t know much about it, that’s why I’m asking.
and I wouldn’t have a clue of cost, are we talking like 5k a year or 50k

I’m just asking a more general query, I’m not planning on starting looking at schools websites

I think it's the MN demographic. Lots of private schools in Central belt Scotland too.

Fees can range from around £10 - £20K for day pupils up to £60K+ for full boarding, per year.

Yogafiend · 03/07/2026 21:55

It really depends on the schools. Although i don’t think you would find one for 5k. We used to pay 30k per child a year.day school not boarding.

MabelsBeats · 03/07/2026 21:57

I think the proportion of children privately educated is actually higher in Scotland than in England.

There’s quite a few them in the South of Ireland. You can go on the website of any school and look up its fees. They vary widely.

I recently read 25% of all children in Edinburgh

RaraRachael · 03/07/2026 21:58

No private schools anywhere near me apart from Gordonstoun

modgepodge · 03/07/2026 22:02

I don’t imagine there are any private schools in England which are £5k unless they get significant funding from elsewhere.

some are £50k. Most are at least £15k now, the majority higher than this I would say.

I think there are some countries where they don’t exist (Finland?!) but I think they exist in some form in most places. Definitely in America for example.

smallchange · 03/07/2026 22:02

I grew up in Edinburgh where about a quarter of children go private for secondary.

Now I'm in Glasgow where it's not so common but there are still plenty of private schools and the prices differ by a fair amount.

I looked up our closest out of curiosity when my youngest was starting p1 and it was about the same cost as nursery fees so theoretically we could have afforded it. I preferred feeling richer than we'd been in years though.

ChalkOutlines · 03/07/2026 22:18

Where I’m from private schools/unis are for the children who basically were unable to attend a state school either due to lack of ability in exams or behavioural issues. Completely different system and mentality.

CatamaranViper · 03/07/2026 22:22

My SEN school cost between £21-30k a year. It's technically a private school

flippinnorastights · 03/07/2026 22:22

My DD school is £33k from September for day pupils. It was £25k Pa in her final year but she had a scholarship so we paid £18k. Our tipping point where we would have had to save said, it’s just too much was £27k.

when she started it was £13k a year which was totally comfortable.

Byron1990 · 03/07/2026 22:22

They range where we are moving to from 12-17k, ours will be £13.7k from September. We are moving from NI though and I think there are only two in the country in Belfast, certainly none where we are!

PanickingOnASunday · 03/07/2026 22:22

What a weird thing to say

howshouldibehave · 03/07/2026 22:23

Public schools are fee-paying too in England 😜

HushTheNoise · 03/07/2026 22:25

@MabelsBeats I believe it is 25% independent schooled in Edinburgh, but the more usual UK figure of around 7% for the rest of the country.

Honeyhonayboo · 03/07/2026 22:26

A much larger percentage of children in England attend private vs NI, but this is also largely driven by the grammar school system in NI and the lack in England.

AgnesMcDoo · 03/07/2026 22:30

20% of kids in Edinburgh go to private schools
