BB gun brought into primary school, am I overreacting?

A boy brought a BB gun into my Dc's school last week. Apparently he had it in his pocket all day and was showing glimpses of it. My Dc said at one point one of the BBs flew past her ear. At the end of the day he told them it was a real gun. One of the children said, no it's not, if it is proove it, then he shot it at a child and hurt their leg. Lots of the other children were totally shocked in that moment and started fleeing and in all directions.
The children didn't know that Bb guns exist and assumed it was a toy, so when he shot it, they thought it was real

He was suspended for 2 days. He came back saying that he had a lovely time off and went to a toy store for a treat. His Mum has also said boys will be boys to another parent. My Dc was afraid they might come in after suspension with a knife as revenge. Hugely unlikely, but that is the impression he has made on his classmates.

I don't know why I can't shake this. He just seems to be such an intimidating child. They were all afraid to tell on him incase he beat them up. I just don't like the idea of him being in my DC's class because anything could happen.

School seem to have done what they can, but it just seems a bit much for a class of 8 year olds.

Am I over reacting? Is this something that just happens in schools now?

Assuming this is for real, I don't know why nobody called the police.

The child and his parents have committed several crimes here.

ChipDaleRescueRangers · 02/07/2026 18:57

I would be fuming! I know perm exclusion is very hard these days for headteachers, but the minimum I would expect is a long suspension, a referral to the local MASH, social services involvement and police involvement at why a child has got his hands on this weapon that could blind or if a high velocity weapon kill someone.

paleyellowbrick · 02/07/2026 19:00

Call the police. They will take this very seriously.

Livingthebestlife · 02/07/2026 19:06

Really ?? I'm thankful I live in Ireland, if that happened here the Gardai would be called at a minimum.

I am in Ireland!
The Gardai were called but said they can't prosecute a child. I suppose the school escalated it to Tusla, but I don't really know what happened. I know the child was back after 2 days and he seems to have had a great time!

How did he get the gun? The laws in Ireland are very strict. Stricter than the UK. Also how did it fit in a child’s pocket? I thought the revolver type BB guns were now totally banned in the South.
I’d be taking my kid out of school if this happened.

Yes, as I have more time to think about it, it just seems so outrageous.
With GDPR it is so hard to know what has actually been done, because the school won't/can't discuss it.
He just feels like such a loose cannon at the best of times, but this is just putting him in another category for me, especially because his parents seem so relaxed about the whole thing!

You are not being unreasonable at all! I hope it get sorted. Not sure the system where you are. But I hope the school is taking this seriously if not escalate it to to MP

Which school?

Tiny rural school in the West....lovely gentle school, which makes this extra shocking.
The children didn't know there was such a thing as a BB gun.

Kids in rural areas where I grew up guns are normal. But farming stuff. But still it's a shock sounds like it's a parent problem. And the kid is suffering as a result

Got it from his parents. Suppose they didn't keep it out of reach.
The laws are super strict. It is classified as a replica firearm and can only be used by an adult on private property. It is illegal to carry in public, but not to own one.
The Gardai said that they can't do anything because it is a child. I don't think they asked to speak to parents. I assume it went to Tusla, the child social services here...but doesn't look like anything happened

That mother will be saying “boys will be boys” as her son gets arrested one day. Stupid woman.

Tillow4ever · 02/07/2026 19:37

So he had it in his pocket all day showing glimpses of it - but also BB’s flew past your daughter’s ear at one point. Both can’t be true at the same time. Plus if he’d been shooting it throughout the day, why weren’t the kids running screaming then and only when he did it at the end of the day?

A lot doesn’t ring true with this.

Tillow4ever · 02/07/2026 19:39

Oh and this is your only ever post too. Bored?

Yes, I think that is why it bothers me. It's a parent problem and no matter how the school tries to deal with it, if they don't care, it will never feel resolved. All the children feel unsafe because they are so irresponsible.

Being suspended is completely unheard of in this school. Never happened a child before, so it seems the school came down as heavy as possible.

Because they only realised it wasn't a toy when he shot a child in the leg. Then they assumed it was real.
They didn't know there was something in between a toy and a real gun

Omg! I didnt even know what a BB gun was until I googled. I think this is really shocking.

No, not bored. Changed my name because it is a tiny school and as you can imagine this was the most dramatic thing that has happened in a long while. Didn't want anyone hunting, like yourself, for previous posts and identifying me.

I only looked because it really does read as if you’re trying to whip people up. It’s a very hard to believe tale.
