How can we reduce visible sunburn lines before prom on Monday?

Mumoftwoteenagers · 02/07/2026 14:46

On Sunday we were outside for most of the day. It was cloudy with occasional sun.

I put the (factor 30) sun cream in my idiot child’s (IC) hand and told her to put some on.

Dh later checked that aforementioned IC had sun cream on.

IC was wearing a lovely off the shoulder top with lots of little straps.

And (surprise surprise!) IC did not put the suncream (that was in her sodding hand!) on her skin and now has a lovely red and white stripy look that a zebra would be proud of.

Which looks just fabulous with her prom dress for Monday!

Any suggestions for improving? She is aftersunning like mad but it doesn’t seem to be working. She is still a zebra. A red zebra.

(For the record aforementioned IC is predicted many many 9s in her GCSEs. IC is really clever. But an idiot!)

IC… Idiot Child?
Lovely

Probably a bit of light fake tan to minimise the contrast?

OtterMummy2024 · 02/07/2026 14:50

Dove gradual tan in light once the redness has gone. Possibly an antihistamine to help it calm down.

fake tan is the only hope.

I have noticed far more tan lines these days at things like oscars etc. Looked it up and apparently its a thing (maybe not in Little Piddlington Secondary School - but she could be a trend setter) https://www.elle.com.au/beauty/tan-line-beauty-trend-explained/

Aftersun isn’t really going to make it go away any faster.

I doubt she’ll still be that red by Monday, 8 days after the burn, unless it was really bad. So if she doesn’t tan, she might not be stripy by Monday. But if she does tan, she’ll have stripy tan.

I’d go for garnier gradual tan to cover it up.

Do stupid things, live with stupid consequences. She will learn (eventually).

Lomonald · 02/07/2026 14:57

I used dove gradual tan for a wedding, i had a "t shirt" tan and it evenend me out. Also exfoliating might help after the burn has calmed down.

mamakoukla · 02/07/2026 14:59

Tan lines…. Live and learn. If your child is okay with it, I wouldn’t stress. My first thought is make up to cover it

GreenFootstool · 02/07/2026 15:00

Fake tan on Sunday. Fill in the gaps!

Sunshineclouds11 · 02/07/2026 15:00

a spray tan

Seconding Dove gradual tanner, it gives a really good colour and streak free coverage.

They do a fair version for light skin and a darker one for medium/darker skin. If your IC 😆 has fair skin at all, don’t be tempted to go for the darker colour, it’ll look awful (trust me!)

You/ IC have got time to build the colour up between now and prom with daily use although I’d suggest maybe you apply it for them!

The colour is apparent from first use and develops over a couple of hours. You could put it on the whole shoulder/arm area and also use a small makeup brush to cover the lines themselves if needed. Personally I’ve found it way better than any fake tan and it’ll be perfect for what your IC needs.

I was accidentally fried for my lovely beach wedding in Fiji. Bought fancy special sunscreen that (sadly) was not waterproof. It looked fine. Put a bit of tinted moisturiser over it and don’t stress too much. Most makeup makes you sweat and it looks worse

hugasaurus · 02/07/2026 15:05

If it’s red then some green colour correction cream will take the redness down a bit.

greengreentall · 02/07/2026 15:07

Send her for a spray tan.

Custardslice3 · 02/07/2026 15:19

I caught the sun a bit on one shoulder a couple of weeks ago on holiday and I realised I had a tube of metanium (the yellow one) in my wash bag for my son. I rubbed a tiny bit of that in and it did seem to help the skin with healing. I kept the shoulder covered all the time while it was red and after 2/3 days it was fine. It did peel slightly a few days later so keep moisturising to minimise that.

professionalcommentreader · 02/07/2026 18:35

IA here who has done the same as your IC and I have an event on Saturday, I’ve been using skinny tan, never used fake tan in my life, their glow gradual tan has plugged the gap.

ViaRia01 · 02/07/2026 18:40

I recently got sunburned (had spf all over but idiot me forgot my chest / neck so I got burnt). Anyway the friend I was with gave me her cream: epimax. It looks like any other moisturiser for sensitive skin - e45, etc etc., and I didn’t really hold much hope but I put it on to appease her. Anyway, in the morning the sunburn had reduced significantly. By the next day, there was zero pain, a little pinkness but jo redness, no peeling. It was genuinely amazing. Definitely get hold of some and get it on her asap

Mumoftwoteenagers · 02/07/2026 23:22

Thanks everyone. I have ordered Dive gradual tan and epimax so fingers crossed!
