Third world problems and all, but seems odd it’s not the reverse. Younger kids (generally) are up earlier. Earlier drop offs are more helpful for working parents (no breakfast club here), older kids can walk siblings to school etc. I’m aware I’m probably oversimplifying it!

Do they? Drop off at my daughter’s primary is 8.40 which is fairly standard I think? Local high school is an 8.40 start too 🤷‍♀️

rainbowunicorn · 02/07/2026 18:27

It's been like that where we live for at least 15 years. Secondary start at 8.40. Primary is 9. They also finish at different times. Secondary finishes at 2.30 some days and 3.40 others. Primary all finish at 3 all days.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 02/07/2026 18:30

We have a college, secobdary and Primary all in a row. They have staggered timings for good reason. Secondary 8.30-,3, primary 9-3.30, college 9-4.

Didimum · 02/07/2026 18:33

It’s the same here. Primary is 8:45 and secondary is 8:40

Don't children get more badly behaved after lunch? They want them when they are half asleep and docile.

user1476613140 · 02/07/2026 18:38

8 .45am for secondary, 9am primary here.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/07/2026 18:40

Gets 5000 teenagers off the too few buses in time for the rest of the town to take their younger children to school and get to work that way. It's also safer, as they are generally capable of walking to and from bus stops and being seen by drivers in the half hour or so either side of the day where it's dark in midwinter.

angelopal · 02/07/2026 18:40

It's 8.35 for our secondary and 9 for primary.

Twasasurprise · 02/07/2026 18:44

Is it rural where school transport is a factor? That's the case here, so the bus collects the older kids by 0745, then doubles back for the primary kids at 0815 to be delivered to their school in a town in the opposite direction.

usererror99 · 02/07/2026 18:45

Gate opens at 8am for secondary and 825 for primary - I’m not about to let my 11 year old walk my 5 year olds to school though so yes I think you are oversimplifying

Pearlstillsinging · 02/07/2026 18:45

Secondary aged pupils can get themselves ready for school and take responsibility for being on time.
Primary aged pupils may well have younger pre-school siblings, who need help to get ready, as might the pupils themselves. I can just hear the howls of protest from parents, if they are asked to get the family to their local Primary earlier than now. Some parents struggle as it is now.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 02/07/2026 18:48

Secondary starts 30 mins earlier. Finishes 10 mins early.
Doesn't make a difference as dc at secondary get themselves to school independently and I would take primary age until they can walk.
Due to distance though secondary age dc get home about 20 mins after primary due to the walk home

reluctantbrit · 02/07/2026 18:51

Secondary means homework, DD normally had at least 1 hour to 90 minutes to do each day. Then she had hobbies starting at 6pm or 7.30pm a couple of times each week and we had to squeeze dinner in.

When I worked in the office DD and I left the house at the same time, 7.20am. A later start would have meant she would be alone for at least 1 hour and with her being AuDHD it could mean she forgot the time, didn't lock the door or forgot her bag (at least in the first year, she got herself a system afterwards)

If you push the secondary school later they cant help pick younger siblings up after school which is probably the more tricky pick up for most parents.

Favouritefruits · 02/07/2026 19:19

i must say I’ve not found that where I live, my youngest DS at primary and eldest DS at high school both start at 8:45.

Doyoumisswordpaperclip · 02/07/2026 19:23

8.30 seniors and 8.55 primary. Senior end at 3.05, primary 3.25 - a lot of seniors collect their siblings from primary
