And they had been refrigerated the whole time. What date would you stop eating them?

Having kept chickens who laid eggs that were not stamped with a 'use by' date I would just employ the float test as I used to with my own hens eggs.

FairyBatman · 02/07/2026 15:52

I wouldn’t even notice, I don’t think I have ever checked the date on an egg!

CallNatasha · 02/07/2026 16:00

Eggs do last slightly longer if you keep them in the fridge (ideally not in the door where the temperature can vary). Doesn't make any difference to supermarkets as they are restocking every day or so but can make them last longer in your home by a few weeks. So I'd assume you have at least a couple of weeks on the BB date. Do the float test if you are worried though.

KrazyKatty · 02/07/2026 16:05

I used to keep a small flock of chickens so their eggs were never dated and I just went by the float test if I thought they were getting old.

I also never put them in the fridge as that isn’t good for them. They’re better off being keep out of direct sunlight and mine were kept on the kitchen dresser.

Eggs can easily last 6 weeks.

HarpieDuJour · 02/07/2026 16:22

I would bin them after 2 weeks but I have a supply of eggs of free eggs (turkey, goose, hen, duck and quail!), so I always have loads.
The best before dates for eggs are about a month after laying, and although they will be safe for longer, they won't be the same quality.

BurntBroccoli · 02/07/2026 21:08

I’ve eaten refrigerated eggs a month past their best before date. They were absolutely fine.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 02/07/2026 21:09

Until they fail the float test. Dh would chuck them away the day after the best before though.

Chemenger · 02/07/2026 21:12

The date is for an unrefrigerated egg so you have plenty of leeway if they have been in the fridge. I have never had a bad egg in my six decades and I’ve never looked at the best before date.

Id put them in water. If they sank I'd eat them and if they floated id throw them away. Eggs are usually good well past their best before date

This!

Never paid any attention to dates on eggs. You'd know if it was a bad one when you crack it.

Unforgettablefire · 02/07/2026 21:16

One of my nephews and his mate found eggs in my fridge that were 6 months out of date (the shame!) they cooked and ate them and were fine.

tealandteal · 02/07/2026 21:20

I don’t keep mine in the fridge and they last for ages after the best before date. I had an off one the other day and it was in date. DS said “Mummy I’m holding my nose but the smell is coming in my ears!”

LorenzoCalzone · 02/07/2026 21:21

21st June

sohard · 02/07/2026 23:01

I’d put them in water and see if they float like a PP

PeonyBulb · 03/07/2026 02:27

I put some eggs in water recently and threw the ones away that completely floated to the top and used the others
