Has anyone tried nicotinamide riboside or NMN for energy and brain fog?

I am currently trying a Nicotinamide riboside supplement as a NAD + precursor. My main reason for trying is to help with energy levels, brain fog and headaches. I'm middle aged and on HRT but really struggling with energy especially in the earlier part of the day but then also not sleeping great at night.
I have been doing other supplements as well like a B methyl complex, Magnesium, Omega 3 and Co-enzyme Q10, Inositol and Vitamin D3 & K2 for a while now and these have helped a bit but I could still do with a bit more get up and go! I am going to the gym and will start seeing a trainer next week to make a plan for my specific needs and my diet is good (wholefoods mostly) but I struggle with sugar cravings at times due to low energy.

Has anyone else tried an NAD+ precursor like Nicotinamide riboside or NMN, did you notice any benefit and if so how long did it take? Any side effects?

Also I have been to the Doctors and had some blood tests which I was told were all in the normal range, I'm in Scotland so unlike England I don't have access to check my actual results.

No but creatine, d-ribose and thiamine are helpful. Check out your pillow make sure you don’t have any sort of sleep apnea and get your neck sorted.

A lot of people on here say their doctor told them they have normal bloods when actually they’re just inside the range, have you seen the figures? Op you’re on a lot of things to not be feeling en pointe, any chance it’s stress/ sleep? O you eat halfway decently and drink water? Do you have good sleep etiquette? Screens off before bed etc?

Thank you, I actually I have been taking Thiamine but the d-ribose looks interesting. I do have some Creatine but it does seem to trigger headaches for me and I've heard it can cause insomnia in some which makes me a bit nervous. I think I need to start with a really low dose and work my way up slowly with that supplement!

@Morepositivemum I asked for the details but was just told it's all normal, if I make an appointment I'm sure my GP would tell me but its just actually getting the appointment! My diet is good, I drink lots of water, some herbal tea and a cup or two if decaf (the clipper one) a day. I am on the PC right now but normally I wouldn't be I'm just checking on this and I use a blue light filter. I'm not really stressed but fed up of feeling as I do, never quite well or energised even though I do the right things!

I tried NMN and had to stop after a couple of weeks because it really upset my stomach

I now take methyl folate i find that really helpful

I second Methylfolate- huge help.

Also a really decent Vit B complex - Inspiracell it’s called

@Huckleberries and @VillageFete I take a methyl B complex which is a pretty good quality one and it does have methyl folate, is there a specific dose you would recommend?

You can ask the doctors receptionist for a print out of your results.
also it might be visible on the NHS app

DaisyGivemeyouranswer · 02/07/2026 07:02

I took NMN for months but it's pretty expensive! It didn't seem to make much difference tbh - I swapped it in the end for Lion's Mane, and I feel like that's much better.

greencrab · 02/07/2026 07:15

Before the NHS app I would go into GP and ask for print out of results, at one stage they charged 5p a sheet of A4 but then I could check myself. You can get your results via a SAR (I'm assuming this is Scotland too) so printing it shouldn't be impossible.

I've not tried this so can't comment and am watching thread for others experience. I am taking creatine and omegas supplements which send to help. My ferritin is low and that caused my brain fog

I'm taking six drops of a 1000 MCG supplement

It says to take 10, but I found that a bit much

Just to check - do you take your progesterone at night as it helps sleep. Do you take any drugs like amatryptilene or similar which also helps sleep but can give you a "hangover" in the morning if so try taking it a bit earlier eg atfer dinner.
