Talk to me about laptops...

Specifically switching from Microsoft to Apple.

Currently have an Asus Vivobook from 2019 which has been absolutely brilliant, I'm amazed how speedy it's stayed! But it's starting to show it's age - doesn't hold a charge or suddenly turns off thinking battery is dead (even if it's actually at 70% when you plug back in) and the keyboard gets quite hot to touch after a couple of hours use.

Looking at possible replacements and I'm very tempted by the Macbook Neo but have absolutely no experience with Apple beyond once having an iPhone for a couple of years! Are they really as good as all the reviews make out?? Everyone says Apple lasts forever and I'd love to get another solid 5yrs at least from whatever I buy next. I'm surprised the Vivobook has lasted this well, if I were to stick with Windows I'd probably go for Asus again, but have I just been lucky with this one?

I'm a light user, mostly browsing and watching videos, a bit of word processing and very occasionally making slides for presentations. No photo/video editing etc.

Absolute maximum budget of £1000 but I'd like to stay lower, ideally more in the £700-800 range.

Just get a new battery for now. The details will be on your existing one - 'google' how to remove it.
Set money aside for a new one in due course. My laptop is about 8 yrs old. It's fine for most things.

New battery will be about £20.

My MacBook died after 8 years. They are not invincible. It was a work one and it had software that caused it slow down a lot. I now have a cheap Lenovo ideapad and it is great. It was £350

i might go Apple again if I don’t need to use Microsoft software. But then again it probably is much more resilient now

I’d stick with Windows. As a MacBook owner (purely to suit 20yo DD’s aesthetic…) they are unnecessarily fiddly and you’ll find that Microsoft platforms like Word, Excel etc aren’t fully compatible.

I have a well-used mid range Asus laptop which is now 10 years old. It's started slowing down in the last couple of years but is otherwise fine.
I wouldn't move to Apple either!
