I will be doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge for the first time this September. Please can you give me all your advice. I'm happy to hear it all from what to wear, issues I might encounter, how to prepare etc. Thank you!

How hill fit are you? If not - try and do a lot of walking and running. Make sure your boots are worn in but not worn out

are you going with people who know the route ?

wear - the normal walking kit
carry - the normal waterproofs , hat gloves jumper and sunscreen
do you need walking poles?

You won’t find it difficult to navigate because there will be dozens of other people. But don’t do it alone.

Wear quick drying comfortable layers. Take a rucksack for the layers you aren’t wearing, water, food and suncream. Expect unexpected weather. It probably won’t be cold in September, but you never know.

There’s a pub and a refreshment cart before you climb Whernside, and on the way to Ingleborough.

Wear broken-in waterproof walking shoes or boots. Take Compeed, just in case.

Consider walking poles. Your knees will thank you coming down the hills.

Train. Start tomorrow if you aren’t already a hiker. It’s a long day.

Phone signal is very patchy.

I'm pretty fit and do it most years as training for other events. Start early (6am) to beat the crowds. It's knackering but perfectly achievable. Wear comfy trail trainers/boots. If there's any sniff of bad weather take waterproofs ( it can be properly wild on the tops) there's a couple of places to get drinks/snacks en route. Pack double the sandwiches you think you'll need ( you'll be starving!) and my last piece of advice is whichever way round you decide to complete it, the last peak is tough going and takes longer than you think. The last 2-3 hours are always HARD going! Navigation is straightforward, you can't go far wrong.
Have fun! Gorgeous part of the world!

I put on a fresh pair of walking socks for each peak which felt amazing.

I don’t normally use walking poles but my guide gave me some for the last hour or two on the final peak and they were such a relief.

as others have mentioned the weather can change once at the peak - so be prepared for rain and heat. We got hammered with both on our trip!

I found having a bag of sweets close to hand helped keep sugar levels up and helped with exhaustion towards the end!

I’ve done it a fair few times over the years. You can’t get lost as there are always loads of people doing it. Ingleborough summit can be a bit tricky navigationally in the mist though, don’t go off the wrong way. It’s quite boring between pen y Ghent and whernside with a longish road section.

Tiny snacks, plenty of water and really good socks.
