Why are you living in your current location?

How did you end up living where you are?

Work?
Schools?
Family connections/support?
Other?

We've lived in our current location for over 20 years.
The primary reason was for schooling, and this particular town was chosen as it had direct trains into London (where we moved from) for both our work.
In the intervening years, the majority of people we've met and become friends with have mostly said the same was true for them.

What are your reasons?

Moved away from my home town for Uni at 18, I chose this town as it’s where my BF at the time was living. Moved to another town for cheaper housing for a short while, then moved back to the Uni town as it’s where we wanted to live for its proximity to a motorway for DH’s job. We live on the edge so in the countryside, schools are great, good shops, and it’s where I’d want to live in retirement.

MrsPorridgepot · 01/07/2026 06:28

I changed countries for a great university on my own as a young single parent…fell in love with the friendliness here and stayed. Decades later, I’ve never regretted it.

Marwoodsbigbreak · 01/07/2026 06:33

Because I absolutely love living where I do. It’s within walking distance of a beach and a National Park.

My friends mostly live close by, there’s plenty to do, and I just feel at home here.

You may live in the same town as me.

I may be!
Hello neighbour 🙂👋

Travelled the world for many years and ended up back in the uk, didn’t want to go to home town so ended up in a fun party town which I’d move away from now 25 years later but the kids are settled here

blackheartsgirl · 01/07/2026 13:36

Parents moved from Sussex to wales 35 years ago. I was 15. It was a work move.

Ive lived here ever since and only moved 3 miles from our first home we moved to.

This is home to me now, for all its issues

Deadringer · 01/07/2026 13:42

We still live where we grew up. Both our families are nearby, it's an area known for great schools, universities and clubs, surrounded by lovely parks and walks, near the seaside, near a good sized town, not too far from a major city and airport, with good public transport. Shops and pubs within spitting distance, I cant imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

PositiveLife · 01/07/2026 13:42

Ended up here for work. Would like to move away but kids are settled and the places I'd want to move to are unaffordable for me.

Dorothyperky · 01/07/2026 13:42

Moved back to my home town ( we live in a village, semi rural) after 24 years elsewhere. We're moving again to get a smaller easier to manage home. It won't be in this location due to availability. I don't mind either location but I really want character and that is in short supply locally. We initially moved for schools and then family. Family are not close as most have died. I'm getting older and I want to live near my friends and then our son when we retire.

OrangeJellySnakes · 01/07/2026 13:45

lived 10 yrs abroad but aside from that have always lived in 1 of 2 neighbouring London boroughs. Have lived in this one now for 23 years. Moved here when the kids were small so we could move from a flat to a house and have stayed here ever since.

OrangeJellySnakes · 01/07/2026 13:45

Now in my 50s and if we can afford it, we will retire here.

TigerRag · 01/07/2026 13:46

Because my previous flat was mouldy and the HA decided that it was cheaper for us to move and for them to sell it.

I needed somewhere that wasn't too far from my parents

MotherofPearl · 01/07/2026 13:47

Schools
Great public transport
Good local amenities within 5 minutes walks (parks, shops, library, doctors’ surgery, cafes)

WilfredsPies · 01/07/2026 13:59

I was born here. My home is built on land we used to play on as kids. I have ties and responsibilities keeping me here and I can’t afford to move to any of the places that I’d happily leave here for.

Not what I’d hoped for as a teenager but I’d also assumed I’d have staff at this point in life, so it’s not my biggest disappointment.

No17CherryTreeLane · 01/07/2026 14:03

@blackheartsgirl How did you feel about the move at age 15?
From all I've read on MN, it's not a good idea to move your DCs during the secondary school years.

Bought this place decades ago as a short-term doer-upper, with every intention of a quick sale and moving on. Did it up. Liked the area. Stayed.

Darnley · 01/07/2026 16:16

Retired, sold my business, moved abroad, currently sitting in the sun by the pool, living the dream.

FlorbelaEspanca · 01/07/2026 16:18

I was living somewhere else and stuck in a rut. I decided to take a sabbatical and do an MA, and the university here had just what I needed. It was only meant to be for a year, but I soon got hooked on scholarship, stayed for a PhD, began teaching at the uni... I bought a house and, though semi-retired will probably stay now.

I do have connections of a sort: my grandparents used to live not far away and I spent many childhood summers up here. But that had nothing to do with my coming to live here.

igelkott2026 · 01/07/2026 16:20

We moved to the general area because it worked for our jobs and we could afford a house.

Then we moved to our current house because of good state schools and it was walkable to town and the railway station - and we could afford the house. We are about 5 miles away from the house we originally lived in in this area.

I think we will move area eventually and will definitely move house because we're now hogging a house in a decent school catchment area that we no longer need and less altruistically, because the neighbours are too noisy.

FriendlyGreenAlien · 06/07/2026 18:00

Needed somewhere halfway between husband’s then job (south coast) and my then job (London). This is a pocket of affordability and we had friends here already so we knew we liked the area.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 06/07/2026 18:01

Couldn't afford a 4 bed house in SW London so moved a stone's throw out. Stay because great schools and neighbours.

JulietteHasAGun · 06/07/2026 18:08

I’ve always lived here in this village since I was born. Never left. I like it good enough. 😁

RaininSummer · 06/07/2026 18:08

Moved here for uni decades ago and had a family here.

enjoyinglifenowretired · 06/07/2026 22:21

2 of my 3 children moved to Wales for work. I had moved away from my home town in S England 10 years previously for my work after living there for 50 years. On retirement I had the chance to either move back to my hometown or nearer to my DC’s. Decision made to live near the 2 DC’s and DGC. Still have to drive 150 miles to visit other DC &DGC’s and 150 miles in opposite direction to visit DF .
Difficult decision and feel guilty that not nearer my DF now he is very elderly ( no siblings) but enjoying living in S.Wales and have made lots of friends in the community. Enjoy seeing the DGC regularly. I think this will be the forever home.
