Experiences of applying for a council disability grant for a downstairs WC

A close family member needs a downstairs WC for health reasons. She would qualify for a grant from the Council if they carry out a care assessment and they agree. They qualify on financial grounds.

However, I am wondering how difficult the process will be and how long the process will take. Kent CC who are the relevant authority say 2-12 months, that they may not pay for all of it, and that there will be a charge on the house for 10 years.

Has anybody had any experience of applying for any of these disability grants to carry out changes to the home with Kent or any other authority? If so, how difficult was the process, how long did it take, and how much were they prepared to pay?

Thank you.

Not Kent. Was awarded grant for stairlift and wet room (HA house).
Stairlift took about a year, wet room 2.5 years and lots of emails.
Good luck!

Thank you Grandma. Did you have to supply lots of quotes and do you mind my asking how much you were awarded?

We (also not Kent) had a wet room put on via council disability grant (our own house)
If I remember rightly it took about a year to get sorted. The council got the quotes and of course went with the cheapest. As a result they had to come back out again a few years later to relay the flooring and sort out the massive leak under the floor! Cowboys! (It's fine now)
There is a charge ...10 years , so if you move before that you are liable to pay the costs back. We didn't have to pay anything.

No, I didn't have to get any quotes, the council did all that
I think some of the delay was quotes had been got, then lost, then they had to start again, or some twaddle.

I can't remember exactly how much it all cost, about £5k, I think. Again, I wasnt involved in any of that.
