Wifi phone for kids.

We would like to install a “safe” landline style phone in our home, children old enough to arrive home from school and be at home for half an hour unsupervised.

I don’t want them having any form of portable phone, I just want something they can call parents/grandparents or approved friends.

Google tells me either a Kite phone or a Tin Can Phone.

Does anyone have an experience or reviews?

Bump? Anyone?

I want the same thing... bumping

I did a lot of googling yesterday, it doesn’t look like there is actually anything on the market in the UK yet, all arriving later this year.

We also have the added issue of poor mobile signal so if we went for a basic mobile/dumb phone we’d need one with wifi calling, which are either cheap and poor reviews or expensive 😬

All the ones I've found are marketed for people with dementia... but actually I think that's probably good too, with simple buttons etc.

I sometimes wonder what would my dc do if I had a medical emergency at home with the kids and was unresponsive (I know it's unlikely). My nearly-6yo is mature enough to call 999 but without an easily accessible phone, she might not be able to find my mobile which could be in a random handbag.

I'll make it my mission to sort one this summer and I'll update the thread!

Kingdomofsleep · 01/07/2026 11:23

(I mean, she'd probably just pop next door to our nice neighbours who would then take over, but still!)

Do you not have a landline?

you could just get one- I know most people have ditched them in favour of mobiles but the infrastructure is there so just ask your supplier or BT to reactivate it?

maybe I’m missing something but this seems a complicated solution to something very simple- you want something that has the same function as a landline but can’t find anything- probably because landlines already exist, no need to reinvent it.

Copper is all being decommissioned from January 2027 so no, the infrastructure will no longer be there

FinalFrog · 01/07/2026 12:23

We don’t have copper to the house, we are full fibre.

BT quoted me £30 a month for a landline (digital) and that didn’t include call costs!

(Has to be BT as we are mid contract for broadband)

Popping to the neighbours is a limited option as we only have 2 so not a guarantee

I don’t think 30/month is outrageous. Among my friends with slightly older kids, landlines seem to be the answer. There’s a big move in my area of local schools getting agreement from parents to do no mobile phones till secondary so the landlines are also being used for the kids to chat to each other. It seems to work well.

we had a break in a few years ago and after that I insisted on a landline being put in. I definitely think you need a way to call 999 that doesn’t involve phones being charged/kids knowing passwords

cinquanta · 01/07/2026 12:32

We have our old landline phone connected to a VOIP service using the original decades old phone number.

It costs about £1.40 a month plus calls.

Correction: £1.80 inc VAT Andrews & Arnold VOIP

FinalFrog · 01/07/2026 12:33

£32.50 not including calls
£49.20 including calls

A mobile phone would be significantly cheaper but I don’t want eldest thinking he “has a phone” 😕

We just plugged the old landline phone into the back of the internet router. I probably wouldn’t class it as idiot proof because DH set it up and he had to contact them a couple of times. To be fair I think the issue was at their end, not ours.
