Dog alone in AirB&B or take dog with me?

Worriedhound · 29/06/2026 19:32

I'm in a very dog-friendly countryside location in a dog-friendly air B&B with a friend and our dogs. We've booked a day out tomorrow, tour along a beach and around some old history locations etc. It was booked a long time ago.

I had decided to not take my dog because she's reactive to other dogs (albeit fine with my friends) & doesn't like loud noises or crowds etc.

However as the time gets closer I am worried (possibly irrationally) about leaving her in the Air B&B. She's aged a lot in the time since the tour was booked and subsequently become more clingy to me and more reactive and grumpy. She's recently been on some pain medication which made her a bit ill although seems fine now.

I'm worried she'll be scared in a strange place.

I'm also irrationally worried that someone will gain access to the AirB&B (possible a bonkers worry as I could just as easily be burgled or such if I had left her at home for any length of time, but at least she's comfortable there).

I am thinking of taking her and just hoping for the best, that there's no other dogs or it isn't crowded and no screaming children given it is term-time.

WWYD?

(Just to preempt questions I might get, yes the AirB&B host allows dogs to be left while guests go out and yes the tour is also dog-friendly. Tour is nearby and about 2.5-3 hrs. Dog is very well behaved while at home, no chewing or toilet accidents etc).

I'd take the dog otherwise you will worry. It's only term time though in the UK in England and Wales just so you know there may well be families.

stayathomegardener · 29/06/2026 19:38

I would be surprised if dog friendly airbnb’s allow you to go out and leave a dog, most don’t.

As an ex airbnb superhost it would have invalidated my insurance.

catslovehairties · 29/06/2026 19:39

I very much doubt you'll be allowed to leave her unattended - most holiday accommodation doesn't allow it.

As I said in the OP the host is fine with it. We already asked her as the AirB&B advertisement implied she was okay with it but it wasn't worded very clearly, plus we were also aware it was unusual so we double-checked.

Please don't leave her alone in a strange place. Very frightening for her. I would be pretty annoyed about this if I were the Airbnb owner too.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/06/2026 19:49

@Worriedhound does she have a crate that she’s happy in?
your dog, not the Airbnb owner

I understand your first point(& I am leaning towards taking her) but what is it you'd be annoyed about?

She does and I am too scared to leave her in it. I am not an unusually anxious person normally. But I thought that if god forbid someone did break in (or a previous guest had kept a key or whatever) she would then be unable to defend herself.

The host may well be fine with it but her insurance may not be.

Jinglejangle2525 · 29/06/2026 23:23

If you really have genuine concerns about taking her to this day out I personally just wouldn’t go. I never understand people who take their dogs away and leave them in a strange place. We went away to a dog friendly place the other month and next door kept leaving their dog alone and all we heard was the poor dog crying and barking. If I take my dog away, my dog comes everywhere, I wouldn’t dream of leaving my dog alone in a strange place, if a day out I had booked was then unsuitable for my dog due to a change in circumstances then I just wouldn’t go to that event.

I understand and I agree. I think the caveat for me was(is) that although my dog has never been great around other dogs, at the time this whole thing was booked (over a year ago) she wasn't anywhere near as reactive to them and was also nowhere near as clingy and protective with me, so the tour wasn't a problem at all other than me probably having to be mindful of other dogs perhaps approaching her.

So I was just going to take her on it. Then she changed and I discussed worries with my friend who told me about the possibility of just letting her stay at our accommodation.

I think the changes were just part of her ageing process and she has aged a lot in the past 18 months or so (from being the same as when young to me really noticing her slowing down in many ways). It has been a big change since this trip was booked.

I adore my dog, and I don't want her to have any situation where she isn't happy. It is just something I couldn't forsee unfortunately.

Potential for damage to my home, anus being dragged all over my carpets, drooling and so on. You wouldn't be there to mitigate any of it.

Okay, well as I've said in the OP the host of this one has already made clear that she's fine with it, so she isnt going to be annoyed.

Anus on carpets isn't something my dog does but if she did that could just as easily happen if we were in another room or asleep, same with drooling. She's never damaged anything either. Those are just risks you take (& perhaps elevate the price for) if you allow dogs in any property as a landlord.

No way would I leave her take her with you

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/06/2026 13:44

Maybe get one of those leads /coats you can get to warn to leave dog alone

I wouldn’t leave a dog alone on a strange place tbh esp as the walk is dog friendly

Tinywhitebutterfly · 30/06/2026 13:48

It sounds like she'd be fine being left. I've looked after a friends dog in my home before, and he was fine when I had to go out, no mess or breakages, and my neighbour would definately have told me if there'd been any issue with barking.

I've left my dog in a house care when I've been away, and I'm sure they weren't with him 24/7, but he's always been fine and happy to go back.

I'm sure your dog will just sleep in your holiday home,, and will be far more chilled than being taken out on a potentially stressful trip.

As the AirBandB owner is OK with it, I don't see any problem.

It is a dog, not a toddler.

WeddingInvitation · 30/06/2026 13:49

It's a bit different as our dog is younger. But we took her to a dog friendly hotel in the Lakes that allowed you to leave the dog unattended for short periods (basically be sensible). We'd tired her out with a big walk and it was all new and strange and exciting. So when we tried to take her out for dinner with us afterwards she made it perfectly plain that she just wanted to go to her bed and sleep. The bed was her safe space even though the hotel was new to her. She was sleepy when we got back.

But I think you'll just worry about your dog - so take her with you - unless it's super hot or similar...

BillieWiper · 30/06/2026 13:51

I don't think you should leave it alone in there. You'd get bad reviews and extra payments if it fouled or broke or damaged something. It's not worth the risk.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 30/06/2026 13:54

Take her but be prepared to abandon your day out if it isn’t the right environment for your dog.

Dearg · 30/06/2026 13:56

If it’s a short trip - couple of hours- and she seemed settled in the property , as it is allowed, I would chance it. But you mention a day trip, and that’s too long for my dog to be on her own, especially in a strange place.

So I would take her, and factor in some cooling breaks etc.

mydogisthebest · 30/06/2026 14:50

We go away with our dog quite often and would never ever leave him alone in them.

If we were not sure about taking our dog somewhere we just would not go

ginasevern · 30/06/2026 15:10

@Worriedhound If it was my dog I'd either take her or cancel the day out. I would definitely not leave her. You'd never forgive yourself if something happened.

parachutegirl · 30/06/2026 16:00

From what you’ve said, you won’t feel relaxed on the day out if you leave the dog behind so you may as well take her along and just be mindful of other dogs approaching.

FWIW we are away at the coast this week, and places we’ve been haven’t been particularly crowded with people like it gets during the school holidays.

Is she small enough to pick up?

Worriedhound · 30/06/2026 17:13

Thank you so much all, these responses are a mixed bag and I appreciate the advice and perspectives!

Day out (I shouldn't have called it that, it was 3 hours altogether) has been and gone, and all was fine, everyone (including dog) happy and back now.

What I did was compromised. Early on, we left her and went for a walk but nearby, listened to see if she barked/howled and nothing. Took her for a decent but not too much for her walk this morning, left her at the AirB&B (with TV and fan on) for the talk and guidance bit, and then we were all left to look around, so I went back earlier than my friend.

I gauged it on what she was like. After our walk this morning she was tired and sleepy. Not a muff out of her when we left. When I returned (maybe just under 2 hours later) she wasn't even that fussy over me coming in, didn't come down to greet me, and was still in the same place she had been when we left. Seemingly very unbothered.

@AlcoholicAntibiotic The terrain where we walked was very uneven, lots of rocks etc which I don't think her joints would've liked albeit she'd have done it, plus I wouldn't have been able to do much of the looking around as she'd have been just keen to get in the sea! So it was the right thing to do.
Once back I stayed with her for a bit and then walked her back to meet my friend on her way back, stopped and had a glass of wine and so dog could have a rest, then back.

She's absolutely fine Smile As @WeddingInvitation says, dogs do make it quite clear when they're not interested in going out and would be happier left to rest and mine very much did this morning. And it wasn't for long. It's only 19 degrees here, warm but not hot.

@Tinywhitebutterfly you were right, she was fine. She's an intelligent breed, I think although she is anxious and clingy she knew what she needed and had cottoned on to the 'this is our home for a few days she they're coming back' so she was fine, I was more the worried/clingy one here!

@parachutegirl I was a little worried but had relaxed a bit and was quite glad when my self-allocated time had come to go back to her! But I told myself it was so unlikely anything untoward could happen, and I'd seen how relaxed she was this morning. She was very unbothered when I got back, walking her was a good idea. And no, unfortunately she's over 6stone! If she was a pick-up-able dog that would've made my decision easily, I'd have just carried her about.

@BillieWiper 'It'.
I knew she wouldn't do anything like that unless she was ill, which she wasn't, and I am more likely to break something than she is if I am honest clumsy as hell

I think some folk do catastrophise, it is always possible that any AirB&B guest (dog or otherwise) could have an accident or break something. I would just clean it up/replace anything damaged or pay for it, job done. These things come with risks, like anything else.

Thank you again for all input, I was unduly worried about this.
