How much roughly do you think this should be? No budget. Like good food. Mid 60’s. Not sure if I’m being extravagant or normal.

I just spent £90 today will last until the weekend. We probably spend about £500 pm

ForPinkDuck · 29/06/2026 16:39

£60-100.

Meadowfinch · 29/06/2026 16:39

For two adults, no alcohol, I'm spending between £60 and £70 a week. That gives us a good mix of meat, fish, dairy, fruit & veg and dry goods.

I cook from scratch.

Buscobel · 29/06/2026 16:43

I aim to spend between £60 and £75 per week, but there are top ups, particularly fruit, as this time of year.

Maybe5 · 29/06/2026 16:45

I spend about £120-150 when it's just DH and me. I am quite extravagant though and buy lots of organic things and berries.

redfishcat · 29/06/2026 16:47

Well, the Retirement Standards people have amounts for a couple from about £400 a month for a basic retirement to £440 for comfortable. They then add on amounts for takeaway’s and meals out. And there is a luxurious amount too.
I am aiming for the comfortable amount, but we spend very little on food out of the home and never bother with takeaway as it usually disappoints.
Have a search for the Standards and see what you think.

I totally misread that first bit and thought you’d said that you spend £90 a day! HmmGrin

hahabahbag · 29/06/2026 17:16

£60-70 here, we eat pretty well too

MadMadMad · 29/06/2026 17:21

£500-600 pm but that includes alcohol and we only eat out once every couple of months so includes ‘nice’ meals at weekends.

reluctantbrit · 29/06/2026 17:25

Hm, I would say I will spend the same as now. We don't take lunches to work, at home we cook/have leftovers/make sandwiches as DH does wfh fully and I work hybrid so the two days I am in the office I buy food.

The weeks DD is at uni we pay between £60-£75 depending how much meat and fish we get.
No alcohol at the moment due to illness.

If I have to buy things like laundry and cleaning supply I can easily add another £25 for that shop.

GameOfJones · 29/06/2026 17:27

I would say about £100 a week. We're a family of four (two primary school aged children) and are spending roughly £150 a week and that is eating mainly organic, whole foods and includes a bottle of wine and inevitably some household stuff each week etc.

Chewbecca · 29/06/2026 17:31

£100pw ish. I cook from scratch mostly and am a bit of a wanker about food. We eat lots of vegetables but only seasonal ones, I avoid imported stuff, especially long distance and avoid processed or junk foods so it is very much meat / fish / eggs / pulses plus veg. I also shop offers and have plenty of time to plan our meals around those.

Move22 · 29/06/2026 17:32

£600 pcm (Booths, Aldi for basics, local farm shops)
We eat well. Little alcohol.

This is more when the family stay - big appetites.

don't eat out ‘regularly’.

NUFC69 · 29/06/2026 18:17

We're both 78 so have been retired for a long time. The average per month this year has been £350 which includes some household cleaning stuff. We don't drink much alcohol, though. I think we have a very good diet: I mostly cook from scratch. It's a mix of meat and fish, with the odd vegetarian dish thrown in. We eat a lot of vegetables, and I usually have fresh fruit and yoghurt for breakfast most days.

Before we retired we kept a note of our household expenditure which was very helpful.

Grin I’d got visions of you swanning around Fortnum and Masons every morning.

palepeony · 29/06/2026 20:56

Thanks all. I cook from scratch too as I really enjoy cooking. Spend around £750 a month so I feel ok now having read all your posts…not massively extravagant. That’s just food though. And bits and pieces for the grandchildren.
