New dentist recommended a filling and I am unsure whether to wait

I attend a BUPA dental surgery. BUPA bought out my last practice, I stay because I really like the hygenist. The dentists rotate in an out of of that practice and I rarely see them same one more than twice.

The new dentist is very young. He has recommended a filling, which hasn't happened to me in years. I had him show me the x-ray compared to last years, and he backed down and said it wasn't a deep cavity and could potentially reverse with careful brushing. He said he recommends filling it so I never have to worry about it again. The filling costs £130 and is outside my regular plan.

I am suspicious, but aware I might be prejudiced because he was young and BUPA wants a profit.

Should I:

  1. Get the filling, its no big deal
  2. Get a second opinoin, which would cost as much in time and money as getting the filling.
  3. Give it 6 months

Give it 6 months and carefully brush.

Give it 6 months, i have tooth ‘on watch’ that has been that way for nearly 18 months, brushing and flossing better has helped it stay stable and not yet need filling.

Option three.
in this situation my dentist generally advocates a wait and see approach.

If you don’t have any pain it’s not near the nerve yet and you have a little time

Get yourself some duraphat, I’ve had shadows on my teeth remineralised with this, I’ve had over excited dentists in the past. Push back, I’ve recently had a filling but she showed me it had got to the dentin layer, so I decided to proceed.
