Is my seven-year-old fridge freezer worth repairing if icing up?

My frostry fridge freezer is no longer fros free When I open the fridge part, it is thick with ice at the back. What does that mean? And should I replace it and buy a new one I don't think it's worth repairing. I've had it for about 7 years.

Have you turned it off and deiced it thoroughly? It's unclear from your post.

Mine is about 10 Yr old and does this too but only when I have things pushed right to the back so they touch the rear wall.
Try keeping everything about 2 inches away and see if that makes a difference.

We have an under counter freeze that ices up a lot. The instructions say this could be due to being over full which restricts air flow.

Also you need to vacuum dust out of the vents regularly. Plus the hot weather won't have been helping.

I would defrost it, check any drain holes for blockages and vacuum the vents.

Also stop pushing things to the back.

That could well sort out the issues.

Umm you will do what ? And I hope you do have a astounding day 😄

Mine does this and we were advised by the hotpot engineer to turn it off and defrost the whole thing for at least 24 hours. The problem is that the ice has got into the casing and needs getting rid of. I just don't have anywhere to put everything for 24 hours to do it so will probably end up buying a new one.

DH takes the back off but the inside back off if this makes sense and frees up the fan of ice if this happens. Look on you tube for tips on repairs. Our freezer is almost 20 years old and it’s had an issue with this 3 times.

Is the temperature light flashing? I recently had fridge problems and a brilliant bloke came and replaced the hinges. Result - perfectly working fridge (and mine is about 16 years old.

It's not really clear from your posts whether it is the freezer icing up or the fridge icing up.

I used to have this in the freezer and it was because the seal on the door had broken. It also happens if you don't shut the door properly. This can happen on integrated units where the outer door stops the actual fridge/freezer door closing perfectly and forming a good seal.

I think for it to ice up water vapour must be getting into the freezer and freezing on the existing ice. Water can't appear from nowhere.

£30 for a new seal got me about 2 years more out of the freezer before I binned it.

Worth it ? Probably not.

I would expect the average fridge freezer to last more than 7 years though, so if it is just the seal it might be worth replacing it.

It was the fridge not the freezer that had ice

Is it freestanding ? We were looking around for a replacement because our elderly one kept icing up and I tried the suggestion of moving it out ( well strong DH did the actual moving ) and when we looked on the back it had a thick layer of dust, almost like felt. A vacuum of it and it’s like a new appliance !

Settlersa · 30/06/2026 18:06

It might be because of last weeks heatwave and it couldn't cope very well, if you had the heatwave of course. I would probably empty and defrost it and as PP says clean the back.
