Would you go to minor injuries for a possibly broken thumb?

I fell down the stairs last night and it looks live I've broken my thumb. All bruised and twice the size of my other one. Would you go to minor injuries or just suck it up?

You need to go. I broke my little finger last year and it needed to be pinned, I would have lost the function of it otherwise. My father broke a finger at around the same time, didn’t go and now he can’t bend it. This is the sort of thing minor injuries is for.

It needs an X-ray. Does your minor injuries have X-ray facilities? If not, then A & E. It definitely needs looking at.

Yes!

Also, especially important for a thumb because it’s the most used digit for pincer grip etc. You would be surprised at how much dexterity you lose if it heals with a deformity etc.

Sycamoretrees · 28/06/2026 00:09

Absolutely! Thumbs are important.

Bluesecretarybird · 28/06/2026 00:09

Of course, wouldn’t even question it. Thumbs are super important.

Our minor injuries department is in A&E its there i went when I broke my ankle which now has plates and screws in it.

Its better than last night i have more movement etc in it but still wondering if I should go.

I didnt think they would do anything for thumbs etc other than strap it up. I know they dont do anything about broken toes so assumed fingers and thumbs the same.

Thumb movement is pretty vital. It's not the same as a finger injury.

Go get it checked.

All the answers so far have said that.

You need an x ray. A toe is much less critical to your manual dexterity than a thumb. It’s up to you of course, however you need to get it looked into. Even if it’s a simple fracture, you need advice on physiotherapy exercises in order to get the functionality back.

Definitely A&E / minor injuries - here's the NHS advice:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-finger/

Also they do x-ray fingers - not the same treatment as toes as retaining full movement is important.

I wish everyone stopped believing that about broken toes. It depends where it’s damaged, if it’s the first toe especially, or sometimes the fifth if it’s the joint they will generally need to do more than strap it or outcomes can be poor, so if you’re unsure even on toes you should go in. Our fingers are quite a bit more important, and thumbs even more so. Please go get it sorted.

Definitely...if its broken and heals up wrong, well it's not good.
