How can I properly clean mould from a detergent drawer?

hi all,

ive had a new Samsung washing machine for a year ish now. Only reason why i splurged on a new one was because it was a ‘auto clean’ function for the detergent drawer.

now me thinking that’s great. No more mould… so so wrong.

it’s worse than my old machine.

I try to scrub it with a brush but there is only so much I can do with that.

can anyone recommend how to clean it properly to get rid of the black mould?

I have to say I only use water and a brush. I never use sprays because the detergent drawer is so tight I can’t properly fit my hand in there to then wipe it over and get rid of any residue and I don’t like the idea of it then being transferred onto clothes but maybe I’m being dramatic here.

any tips or advice would be fab thank you guys.

You can remive the detergent drawer entirely and soak it in a bleach solution.

I remove mine after every wash to allow it to dry out before I replace it and don't get mould problems.

Soontobe60 · 27/06/2026 19:21

What model do you have?

tinyspiny · 27/06/2026 19:22

You need to take it out to clean it properly as they get minging underneath the drawer sometimes as well .

I leave the detergent drawer open together with the drum door for a good while after a wash. No mould, machine is three years old now.

I'm afraid I'm a slattern and only take the drawer out to clean underneath at rare intervals. So shoot me now.

Veronyk · 27/06/2026 19:25

Clean it with cleaning vinegar.
Going forward always keep the drawer and the washing machine door ajar. They only go mouldy if closed.

Middlemarch123 · 27/06/2026 19:26

Take it out and use Cillit Bang black mold spray on it, scrub, rinse replace. Do it every week to prevent buildup.

We always leave ours open, so don’t get mould. Nonetheless, I periodically take it out and put it in the dishwasher.

Normally you can unclip them and take them out. I then give it a good scrub in hot soapy water.

CraftyNavySeal · 27/06/2026 19:31

Take it out completely to clean it and then going forward put the detergent straight in the drum and you never have to clean the drawer again.

Ooh I've always wondered about doing this, usually when I'm scrubbing mine with a toothbrush.

I didn't try it in case it removed the printing.

Remove the drawer, use an old tooth brush and get rid off the majority of the gunk then soak in cold water and bleach. Sadly it’s one of those jobs that just has to be done fairly regularly.
for the drawer holder compartment mold and mildew remover spray works well just spray it on, leave for 20mins and scrub with the toothbrush. Make sure you rinse it off properly and run a rinse cycle to get rid of any residue.
i have to clean mine every couple of months

Screamingabdabz · 27/06/2026 19:42

Mine is never mouldy because I always put the powder straight in the drum. Never use the drawer. Perhaps once you’ve cleaned it, don’t bother using it in future.

I never have to use bleach or mould remover -the drawer is hard plastic and the gunk washes off. An old toothbrush and stiff bristled thin cleaning brush do the trick.

It gets very mucky in the top of the space too! I use Viacal on a non scratch cleaning pad

LoafofSellotape · 28/06/2026 14:41

Fill your sink with hot soapy water, remove the whole drawer and give it a really good scrub. Put your marigolds on and give the drawer cavity a good spray and scrub too. Repeat every couple of weeks.

Tryagain26 · 28/06/2026 14:45

You need to take the drawer out and soak it in a bleach solution. It's impossible to clean it with just water and a brush

Only if you’ve left it too long. It’s easy to clean!

This ^ It’s very satisfying

DollopOfFun · 28/06/2026 14:58

In this house, if it's not nailed down it goes through the dishwasher.

Teenagerantruns · 28/06/2026 15:00

I dont think l have cleaned the washing machine drawer, it looks ok to me, no mould l can see, l do chuck washing powder /liquid in the drum though.
Washing machine 6 years old and seens fine.

TheCurious0range · 28/06/2026 15:00

Take the drawer out that washes easily with a sponge and washing up liquid, then get one of those dishmatic brush sponges you can put washing up liquid inside and use that for the cavity where the drawer goes. I usually then put it on an empty hot wash with drum cleaner in so it's had a run through before doing another load. Do it regularly though I wipe ours every month and do the above every couple of months, I do about 8-10 loads a week though

LesSanglotsLonguesDesViolonsDAutomne · 28/06/2026 15:05

If you’re in a hard water area the mould might be growing on limescale, so you’ll need to remove that or you’ll never get the mould off. White vinegar will both descale and kill the mould. Pour enough in the drawer to cover the mouldy part, then leave it to stand before putting a hot wash on with no clothes in the drum.

ACalmSpaniel · 28/06/2026 15:08

You could wrap a damp cloth round something or hold one with tongs and wipe it that way. It's a fiddle but saves potentially hurting your hand.

momager22 · 28/06/2026 15:21

Just pull the drawer out to clean it ?
