Insecure about my pale skin, is there any products that can darken my skin a little?

As someone with ginger hair and very white skin (no freckles which makes me look more white) I have always felt insecure and unattractive. I know im athletic and have a better physique than 98 percent of men I see shirtless but id never take my shirt off in the sun cause id blind people lol.

Is there any products that can make me look a bit tan and natural? Because im going on holiday soon and every time I go abroad I sometimes get negative comments, I also dont tan or change colour at all in the sun.

Have you heard of fake tan?

Smartiepants79 · 27/06/2026 17:01

Of course, have you never tried any fake tans?? There are loads to choose from.

Have you been living under a rock? Have you never heard of fake tan?

Dove moisturiser with gradual tan takes away the reflectively white element to my skin tone without being too much

Kim5678 · 27/06/2026 17:06

Fake tan is easy to fuck up the first time you use it so I would suggest booking a spray tan as the colour will be even and not streaky. I know how you feel as my skin is basically transparent but I’m sorry you’re getting negative comments, that’s really mean - you don’t get to choose your genes!

BlackeyedSusan · 27/06/2026 17:06

No point. Fake tan just looks wrong. Keep covered up anyway because you will burn without factor 50, possibly even with it, and it fucking hurts.

Iamateadrinker · 27/06/2026 17:07

I am similar skin but not hair colouring and have tried everything but either too messy/ time consuming/ expensive so I decided to live with it.
However, when someone said to me " Ew you are so pale aren't you? " my response was " oh...I never thought of you as being someone who would make negative remarks about someone's skin colour...is that your attitude towards people darker than you too...?"
They shut up very quickly

But if your skin has changed colour they will know you’ve done something no matter what it is? Fake tan isn’t like makeup, it reacts with your skin and once it’s developed you wash it off so the colour is left. There isn’t really another option as a sunbed would probably fry you

Irishlad9812 · 27/06/2026 17:11

@Iamateadrinker although I think fair/pale skin is considered more of an attractive trait on women than men

No one cares. That's the honest answer. You're pale. A lot of people are pale. You'll look stupid with fake tan if your skin doesnt naturally tan. You'll look like Donald Trump. I would just make sure you pick clothes well to compliment your skin tone and live life.

I doubt it, male grooming is all the rage these days I believe.
But at the end of the day you have to decide which bothers you more. Being pale or your mates taking the piss a bit.
Own your choices! It’s only embarrassing if you allow it to be.

I use Dove moisturiser that has slight self tan properties. Buy the light one and don’t put it on your knees, elbows or the knobbly bits on your ankles. Use it sparingly over a few days and go for a very slow build up. I wouldn’t use it on my face as it would be too easy to go wrong. Make sure it’s rubbed in properly and wash you hands afterwards as otherwise you will have blotchy hands.

Go full Donald. Fake Tan & Self-Tanning | Face & Body - Boots
The gradual ones might suit you.

Myanna · 27/06/2026 17:18

I like the tan luxe drops. You add them to any moisturiser. You can just add a tiny bit to start with and then see how you go. It's very subtle.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/06/2026 17:19

Do you really want to look like Trump, one of the world’s most unattractive men?

GreenJungle · 27/06/2026 17:20

I’ve never got fake tan to work. The jump from paper white to tan is so shocking, it just doesn’t work. If you really wanted, get a professional to do a spray tan on you. Lots of people say the dove gradual tan but the light one was still too dark for me. You need to try these things out in good time beforehand.
what has worked for my face is the lightest shade of L’Oréal lumi glotion. I put this on my face (cheekbones, top forehead, middle of nose and jawline) and top of arms, but it would come off in water.

This is a brilliant response - I’m going to use this!

I just go for the You've been tangoed look. I'm pale but slap on the dark one.

That’s a good suggestion.
They are more subtle than fake tan or even the gradual tanners.
As an Irish lad do you use body moisturiser ?
My Irish husband and sons don’t 😀
