What sort of budget and what sort of interests? Are you a close relation?

CaptBirdsEar · 27/06/2026 06:28

Budget unlimited, yes close

Do they have particular interests that you could buy them years' passes for?

What are their interests?
Particularly for the 16 year old, is there anything she could really benefit from investment in at this stage. An expensive camera? Same could be true for the boy if he has a passion/drive?

If there is no particular investment that is obvious, I (a secondary English teacher) would always suggest investing in 1:1 tuition. I work in an amazing (SEN) school so my GCSE students get a 1:3 staff ratio. Of course they have additional needs etc etc but that 1:1 tuition is priceless if you can get it.

Oooh! Unlimited budget really?! I wish I were related to you.

Going off my interests:

  1. Horse riding week somewhere
  2. Cinema annual pass
  3. Week away somewhere nice

DS1's interests:

  1. new iphone (which actually i am getting him for his effort in GCSEs.. he's SEN and anxious and he turned up every day and completed every exam, he deserves it)
  2. Very expensive book voucher
  3. Multiple Freanch New Wave cinema dvds- his current special interest
DS2
  1. Membership to our nearest 'big theatre'.

Surely the gifts should be aligned to their individual interests? Do you know what those are?

And ‘unlimited budget’ is perhaps not the most helpful answer. Round the world trips? Teslas with personal chauffeurs? The entire A/W collection from Chanel?

Sorry to double post but I also want to highlight mental heath and outside life. If your relatives have “any teeny tiny glimmer of a spark of sideways glance at an “extra curricular” Make it the closest, easiest and best thing that has ever happened. Trust me (full disclosure I don’t have kids but I have taught in the SEN/PRU/UHOH sector for 12 years) 14 year old me said I would never “bribe” my kids. 14 year old me was stupid and naive.

Dd's friend and her sister have been promised a horse each if they do well in GCSE's.

Hah! Ditto. DH is all about rewarding for effort. (Not results, effort). i was a bit snooty about that... until I realised that I had to be bribed to go to work via my salary. Grin

The 16 year old presumably has done their exams, maybe wait until they have their results.

ExOptimist · 27/06/2026 06:53

Cold hard cash.
