Do you go sea swimming?

I live by the coast and would love to give it a whirl this summer.

What do you take and if you go solo, are your towel/clothes safe on the sand?

Any recommendations for waterproof kit to swim with phone/keys etc? I’m scared they will get ruined.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 02/07/2026 05:01

We live 3 minutes walk to the beach (& 6 minutes back - steep hill!). SE, so not remote. We just take keys (we wear dry robes down). But the few times we have taken a phone or purse we've just made sure they're well buried in the robes.

Despite the fact that the sea is about as safe as is possible for sea to be (no accidental drawings in the two+ decades we've lived here) the rule is nobody goes swimming unless somebody else goes with them. This sometimes takes the form of watching from the beach. My children are now all young adults, and to the best of my knowledge have always stuck to this.

We swim as often as possible in the summer.

ViciousCurrentBun · 02/07/2026 05:57

I grew up 4 mins form a beach and used to just run there and the. Run home, I used to take a towel and that was it,

I still sea swim when I can and again take as little as possible. I knew every bit of the beach of my childhood, be very cautious swimming anywhere you do not know well because of tides and shelves. I just started to wear beach shoes that you swim in.

not so much any more
dont go after the rain

i do enjoy it though

WeddingInvitation · 02/07/2026 06:33

Not often, but live somewhere where there are lots of beaches with very good or excellent bathing quality. So will once it’s warmed up a bit, the sea that is, so now-ish onwards go in for a dip, usually while DH walking the dog, or with a friend. It’s a dip and a bob about rather than a swim. I’ll have a swimsuit on under my clothes and a towel in the car. Leave my phone in the car and keys under clothes. But I live somewhere where it’s vanishingly unlikely a car or even a phone would get nicked.

there are also lots of swimming grouns I could join if I felt the urge.

Mumofyellows · 02/07/2026 06:42

I generally go with my husband or daughter, the beach we go to is pretty quiet with rarely any other people around and we don’t venture too far out so our stuff is fine. I don’t go in all year round, just in nice warm days, sometimes twice a day when it’s super hot as it really cools you off before bedtime having a late evening swim, I find it really helps me sleep.

We live in the banks of a sea loch, I walk down my garden on to the bank of the loch, I normally just take my dry robe for getting out. When I go further afield I leave my stuff on the bank and have a waterproof phone case I attach to the strap of my swimsuit and tuck it to the hip of my swimsuit, it has my car key and phone in. Nowhere I swim is crowded and I always let DH know where I’m going and what time I’ll be back.

Wow this sounds lovely! Very lucky to live there!

Honeyhonayboo · 02/07/2026 06:47

Regularly.
Swimming costume, sea shoes, sea float, towel and dry robe. Have phone, keys etc in my dry robe pocket.
Sea swimming is incredibly common here and there is an area everyone leaves their belongings together, theft has never been on my mind.

I usually go after work, so the water has been warming up all day, the crowds have mostly gone, so I can find a parking space. No need for sunscreen then, either. There are usually still people about. If there are no swimmers around, I'd be wary of going in.

My bag has two towels, cossie, an old sun dress, swim shoes for shingle beaches, goggles (don't always use them, especially when trying to avoid ears getting wet.) Hairbrush, water bottle.

You don't need all of that. Towel and cossie. I leave my keys in my bag on the beach, as the swim bags I've tried haven't been waterproof when testing.

In the last 10 days or so, I've swum at Southsea, Boscombe, Calshot and Weymouth, fitting in with theatre and friend visits. You can check water quality online, and also sea temperature. It's lovely right now.

Edited

I am surprised you have swam at Southsea as its meant to be full of 💩 currently

I was due to go to the theatre later. There were quite a few others in, and I haven't been ill.

Rubyslipperswitch · 02/07/2026 08:10

Yes all the time. I live in a small seaside town.

I wear swim shoes as we have pebble beaches and just make sure I shower after being in the water. Never had any issues.

People here swim solo all the time and just leave their stuff on the beach.

The beach does not get crowded especially during the week so it is easy to keep and eye on bags.

AgentCooperdreamsofTibet · 02/07/2026 08:20

I swim the sea several times per week. There isn't too much of a sewage problem in these parts but I always check the water quality anyway and if it's in any way iffy, I go to a local reservoir instead - tbh, at this time of year, I'm more concerned about Lions Mane jellyfish, which are blooming in large numbers so I tend to swim in freshwater in July & August.

Luckily my local beach has hooks for belongings. If I go elsewhere, I take a camping chair for my stuff so it's off the ground - easier to get changed if things aren't all sandy and it reduces the risk of a dog peeing on it, or an over-excited child running through and inadvertently dragging my towel into the water.

I rarely swim with other people - I like to actually swim and find that most groups are about dipping/bobbing - no shade here, that's absolutely fine but not what I want. Where possible, I like to have DH or my mum on the beach (can't persuade them to come in) to look out for me. If they are not available, I will go in only if there are other swimmers around. I find that, whether bobbing or actually swimming, folk tend to keep an eye out for each other. If it's deserted I don't go in.

As with others, I use a dry-bag tow-float for phone, keys etc, and also for visibility.

AgentCooperdreamsofTibet · 02/07/2026 08:23

Oh yes, swim shoes too - can pick up some decent cheap ones at decathlon. These are needed for stony beaches and also if there are a lot of crabs around! A few years ago I inadvertently stood on a large crab who, quite understandably, fought back and took a chunk out of my foot.

No. Far too cold for me and I'm scared of the sea. I'd paddle tho.

BathersOnTheLine · 02/07/2026 08:36

I take just the bare essential to the beach in a basket i.e. a flask/bacon butty in foil and my book. Bathers on under my clothes - strip down and I'm in.

One of those cheapo toweling changing ponchos makes it much easier to change back into your dry clothes afterwards and you can dry using it so no need for a towel. I sit in that to have my breakfast and I'm dry by the time I've finished.

I bought a key safe from Screwfix for under 20 quid so I don't even have to take a key.

In 40 years nobody has ever stolen my ratty old basket funnily enough 😀
Happy swimming!

Natsku · 02/07/2026 08:56

I don't live near the sea unfortunately (live by a lake though which I often swim in) but my parents live by the sea so I swim when I visit them. Mum has a beach hut so we leave everything in there, lock it, and just take our towels and the key hidden in a towel. Only swim when the lifeguards are there and don't go out deep. I mostly just enjoy jumping with the waves. If the waves are right, I get the bodyboard out.

TooOrangey · 02/07/2026 09:00

I love swimming in warm seas like the carribean. You couldn’t pay me to swim in polluted, freezing British coastal waters.

Naurrr · 02/07/2026 09:05

Nope, it raises cortisol in women's bodies, which is not something I need.

Plus the horrors of what's in the water 😱

Lexy2345 · 02/07/2026 09:11

Lots of jellyfish in the sea round here, but I still swim two or three times a week. I take a picnic blanket to sit on, sun protection, a book, a water bottle, my phone and keys, all stored in a beach bag. No-one has ever been near my stuff.

Also good for the dreaded weever fish.

I swim and snorkel in the sea, but rarely in the UK unless I fall in.

There will be a group that you can join locally if you want a bit of moral support. They will show you the ways.

I was very dubious about all the waterproof phone cases but they do work.

i put a tissue in first time (and no phone) and not a drop got in.

Which one do you have? Because the ones I tested in the bath did mean I had soggy tissues.

Octavia64 · 02/07/2026 19:17

I have the zone 3 waterproof phone pouch.
