Bristol with a Teenager

DD (14) and I go away for a few days on a city break every summer and this year we’ve chosen Bristol. We’ve had some fantastic suggestions of things to do in the past from fellow mumsnetters, and I am hoping that this year will be the same.

We’ll probably do a self guided walking tour to get our bearings on the first day. Otherwise we like museums (but can’t get her into an art museum), second hand or quirky shops, perhaps some live music if there is anywhere that lets under 18s in. We come by train, so looking to spend time centrally or use public transport.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Wake the tiger
Ss great britain
Loads of theatres so may find some live music there, check out st George's hall or the beacon, but lots of other venues too
One of mine loves za za bazaar an all you can eat buffet
The zoo is nice for a trip but quite expensive

SouthwarkLass · 26/06/2026 17:18

Another vote for Za Za Bazaar Global buffet, teen ds loved it.
Do a Banksy walking tour
M shed museum
Boat trip around the dock developments
St Nicholas Market

PrincessSassy · 26/06/2026 17:20

Oh and go see suspension bridge, the Observatory by it is pretty cool for a look around too. Plus the rock slide.
You can get there by train to Clifton down from temple meads or by bus (think it's number 8)

JohnofWessex · 26/06/2026 17:22

The zoo is closed alas

M Shed (Am I the only Mumsnetter who donated an item on display there?)
Boat trips round the docks
City Museum & Art Gallery
Concord at Filton - Aerospace Bristol
City Museum and Art Gallery
Brunel Buttery
Go to Bath for the day
Clifton (Ok Yah!) Royal York Crescent etc

Where are you coming from and how are you getting there?

JohnofWessex · 26/06/2026 17:24

Thinking about it the train to Avonmouth/Severn Beach goes through the Avon Gorge

That bits pretty scenic as far as Shirehampton just dont get off after that!!

Honnomushi · 26/06/2026 17:25

The Harbourside is good for a walk. On weekends they generally have a steam train running. A ferry ride is a fun way to see the sites. Mshed museum & the Matthew
Just off Park St is Cabot Tower & it sits in a lovely park. Park St has some great shops & Bristol Museum is at the top.

VividDeer · 26/06/2026 17:29

Most things suggested, but I love the botanic gardens (small).
See the bridge from the caves and the camera obscura.
There is a walk around the waterfront in a circuit.
The cathedral is pretty and near the museum

We are curious if she likes that kind of thing- interactive science.

Weepingwillows12 · 26/06/2026 17:31

Wake the Tiger is pretty interesting. My kids really enjoyed it.

RummidgeGeneral · 26/06/2026 17:32

Go down Stokes Croft and watch her eyes pop out on stilts! There is good graffiti mural art down there.

Always entertaining stuff going on if she wants to see all sides of Bristol life. It is a bit like bohemian Berlin!

shellyleppard · 26/06/2026 17:35

There is a Wallace and gromit statue trail. Also the ardmaan studio

Disasterclass · 26/06/2026 17:39

Lots of ideas already, thank you - will have a google

M Shed looks up our street. What item did you donate? Maybe we can go and find it!

A collection of paddle steamer tickets!

They are(were) in a corner on the ground floor

I was given a lot when the old P&A Campbell office closed in about 1981

The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Road has live gigs/DJ sets every night of the week and allows accompanied 16 year olds. It also serves speciality pizzas and good Sunday roasts. Go to Wapping Wharf for a great selection of eateries housed in shipping containers and whilst there check out Something Elsie specialising in vintage 80's/90's clothes. You could then visit M Shed and do a boat/water taxi trip round the harbour or just wander round the harbourside. The SS Great Britain is pretty interesting too. Obviously there's the Banksy Tour, various food tours, a ghost tour and of course a couple of pirate tours.

whatsadentist · 26/06/2026 18:34

The zoo is open however it has moved to near Cribbs Causeway so difficult to get to from TM.

There’s the harbour ferry that has a stop near TM, takes you up to past the SS Great Britain

BoredZelda · 26/06/2026 19:41

MShed was awful, we didn’t enjoy it at all. But the science museum was one of the best we’ve been to.

For second hand and quirky shops, plus lots of interesting little eating places, have a look in St Nicholas Market.

Also the Cargo shipping container area on the harbour side.

Actually, the whole area around the harbour tends to very lively and fun in summer.

Missingguineapigs · 26/06/2026 20:36

I Am Acrylic workshop. The Observatory and you can go down a tunnel and out onto a balcony in the cliff. Sushi making workshop at Yo Sushi. Wake the Tiger.

IPartridge · 26/06/2026 20:43

The Wallace and Gromit trail was last summer. I'm not sure if there are any left?
