Shoo ants

I have nc for this just incase anyone I work with is on here

I am lucky enough to have a couple of picnic tables in the shade at work , so I cam have my lunch outside.
However there are plagues of ants that think the table is theirs.

Does anyone know of a way to deter them , I'd rather not put poison down .
I have put some grape half's down a a few inches away from each table legso they have something else to eat but they still want my ham sandwiches!

Could you put a line of sand around the tables? Or just put some food away from them and hope it distracts the little buggers?

Purpleandping · 24/06/2026 15:06

It will be because the tables have food for them (sugar). They need a good scrub and regular cleaning.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 24/06/2026 15:06

Do you have a pet anteater? Or access to an anteater?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 24/06/2026 15:28

It is theirs. For you, it's a picnic table where you spend 15 minutes daily. For them, it's their nation, where they live, work, where they're born and die.

Typical tourist, going on holiday and then complaining about all the locals!

AntBeGone · 24/06/2026 15:29

@shellyleppard the tables are on grass so I'm not sure how successful sand would be , there is mounds of sand all over the carpark that the ants have turfed out of their burrows .

@Purpleandping I have tried that to no avail unfortunately.

@didntlikeanyofthesuggestions oh I wish, I wonder if someone could set up a loan scheme a bit like BorrowMyDog , or them guys that take hears of goats around to clear land of brush and weeds

I wish we could have the 🤣 emoji back.

Glad you enjoyed!

I had a rather more horrific ant story this week. Was repotting a plant the other day, and found a worm in there. Moved him across to another pot so I didn't hurt him, looked over 5 minutes later to find him having been bisected into 3 pieces by a swarm of ants who were dragging him off to god knows where.

I felt so guilty!

AntBeGone · 24/06/2026 16:24

Ohh poor worm , I know it's nature and all but I certainly understand your feeling of guilt ( even though you're definitely not guilty of doing anything wrong)

Ants are amazing little creatures !

Chalk! They won't walk over a line of it...not a proper deterrent but I swear it works for a short while. Not so sure if the picnic tabes are on grass but mabye around the legs/edges of the picnic table?

Question...tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day of the year so far...Does anyone think we will have that FLYING ANT DAY'? Google usyal says July/August but it's so hot for this time of year!!!

This is the only sensible and realistic suggestion. Problem solved OP.

Thebibleofdave · 24/06/2026 16:40

@AntBeGone Sorry I just realised you replied to pp saying grass. I still think it's worth a go drawing around the legs and edges of the tables. I worked in a call centre and the kitchen was overrun and my boss decided I was pest control aswell. I couldn't bring myself to kill anything...never mind use poison in a place people will be eating so googled my head off. Chalk was the only thing that worked! If you passing a pub on the way home or have a local with pool or darts there is bound to be a spare stick of chalk there if you ask nicely! Good luck and hope you enjoy a nice sandwich tomorrow x

AntBeGone · 24/06/2026 17:23

Oooh chalk @Thebibleofdave I think I have heard of this before.
I fairly sure I don't have any at home but I will have a hunt around.

Like you I don't want to use poison.
But if flying ants do appear then I'm afraid the little buggers will get swatted across the car park!

Well unfortunately I don't have any chalk at home .
I was told that ants don't like garlic, so I finely chopped a clove and rubbed it into one of the table legs , did it work ? Did it buggery!
Apparently ants are not related to vampires 🦇 .
