Car tyre repair kit

My car is in for service and MOT. The only urgent thing needed is the tyre repair kit expired Sep 25. £45 to replace.

How much does that matter?
Presumably it's the goo that's out of date? Can I get that from Halfords/Amazon or do I need to buy the whole kit from the dealer?

Isn’t it because you’ve not got a spare? If so then it’s essential. You can buy the same thing on Amazon at a cheaper price. Just check compatibility with your make and model.

You can buy the sealant as a standalone.

Yes. I just wonder how much the dates matter, if it really needs doing now. E.g. I'd replace out of date prawns, but if old cheese looked Ok I'd eat it. Presumably this stuff doesn't go off overnight.

The repair kits only work with a tiny puncture, twice I wrecked a tyre, fortunately had a slimline spare, more reliable.

I know, but my decision making process whn I chose the kit over a spare was if I'm on my own, I'll be able to manage the kit. I probably can't chnage a wheel, due to lack of strength not skill, so I'd have to call for help anyway.

Tyre sealant isn't checked as part of the MOT nor is there a requirement to have any or a spare wheel. So your car won't fail an MOT due to lack of either or the sealant being out of date. It's pretty crap anyway, at best it will allow you to drive to a tyre shop within a few miles. Plus a lot of the time, it's not advisable to do any work on a car at the side of the road, eg if you're on a motorway or similar road.

I wouldn't pay £45 to replace it, you could probably get another can of sealant elsewhere for a lot less.

It has saved me and got me home once though, and I was able to do it myself, which I probably wouldn't have been able to if it had been a wheel change.

I'm interested to know if the sealant is still likely to be "fine" or if there is genuinely a risk it would be unusable.
