Random thoughts while driving to work this morning-Light-hearted.

Just that really, I think some really random stuff as we all do I suppose. Mine today were:
1.Since when was "Polka Dot" pronounced "Poker Dot"?!
2.How bloody creepy are the lyrics to George Michael's Father Figure?!
3.What possible purpose do flies serve?
What were you thinking about today?

My dh often accuses me of having random thoughts, and wonders how my brain is wired.

Following on from your op,

Why is a a polka dot calked a ‘polka dot’?

HoraceCope · 23/06/2026 09:48

why does my nasturtium plant pot have lots of ants in it
and what shall i do about it,

Teacaketravesty · 23/06/2026 09:48

I say ‘pol-ka’ (NW English accent). I have heard ‘poker’ for it, assumed N/S thing.
Flies are pollinators.
I have no original random thought to contribute.

I assumed everyone had thoughts like me 😂
I don't know why they are called that...maybe to do with the dance?
Apparently they are now called 'Poker dots' or at least pronounced as such. Another American influence I imagine.

I know the answer to that! It has ants because your plant has aphids and ants eat aphids. You need to get rid of aphids and the ants will go away.

Why does just taking one layer of skin (accidentally) off my little toe hurt so much?

How do cooling towels actually work!

Why does the first cup of tea taste better than the rest?

These were my random thoughts on the way to work this morning.

Me too, Yorkshire. I'd never heard it pronounced differently until recently.

Flies are a really important part of our ecosystem. They are food for larger insects and animals. They decompose organic matter and are also pollinators.

Great thoughts...Ouch for your toe.
I have the Coolsoft mat and pillow case, they are amazing. Agree about the first tea too but coffee for me.

I hate them with a passion.

Talking of cooling mats, in hot weather, I turn my pillow over, and the new ‘upside’ is lovely and cool. Why is that so, when previously that was face down, and squashed on the bed.

The term "polka dot" originated in the mid-19th century and is believed to be a reference to the popular polka dance. Polka music and dance were all the rage in Europe and the United States during this time, and the term "polka" was often used to describe various products and fashions that were considered trendy.

I liked George Michael, but agree that ‘ father figure ‘ was a dreadful song with questionable lyrics.
Flies and wasps should be culled , by I know people will disagree with this. They probably serve a purpose of some kind, but no idea what.

The other day I had an urgent need to know what the population of Russa was and I realised I didn't have any idea - it was a lot less than I thought, my guess was 2-300 million, but it's actually about half that.

@the80sweregreat it didn't include flies or wasps, but I listened to a good podcast series recently, that looked at what the effect would be if some of the things we may consider harmful or unpleasant, eg worms or rats, suddenly disappeared. It was usually bad, and you're probably right about flies and wasps, if there was none of them, something would likely suffer.

Adding cinnamon to your pot plants can deter ants.

the80sweregreat · 23/06/2026 12:45

That is a random list op! I often wake up with weird thoughts. Who discovered which food you can eat safely and who ate the first poisonous mushrooms and discovered you couldnt ( Other foods too)

From google :

There is no single person who ate the first poisonous mushroom. Throughout prehistory, early humans and hominins relied on foraging, discovering which foods were safe through centuries of communal trial and error. When someone accidentally consumed a toxic fungus, the resulting illness or death taught the rest of the tribe to avoid that specific variety in the future

I have asked this before and been given answers but not satisfied. Why do birds die and where are all the dead bodies .

Why do you get sick if you drink foreign water . How is it so different from ours .

mylittleyumyum · 23/06/2026 14:17

Does bird poo smell (with the exception of penguins, I know that stuff is rank)

Bjorkdidit · 23/06/2026 14:32

Puffin shit stinks. I went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands where all the puffins congregated on and shit all over one particular island. You could smell it from the boat, which must have been 50-100 metres away.

Birds will die in accidents, being killed by predators and of old age/illness. Those that are dead on the road are sometimes cleared away. But the bodies are often eaten by scavengers, eg crows, raptors, gulls and foxes.
