DH won’t believe that we should keep the windows closed

With the heatwave predicted, DH and I have come back to our annual argument about keeping the house cool.

I think that once the air outside is hotter than you want your house to be, you should close the windows. I also keep the curtains closed when the sun is shining on the windows.

DH insists that you keep the house cool by having the windows and curtains open.

He says the air coming in cools the house down. I say that it feels cool because it’s moving when it touches your skin, but after a certain point it’s actually hotter than the air in the house.

He insists on doing it his way, and the house is always boiling. One day recently was really hot and I closed the curtains before going out for the day; when we came back it was nice and cool inside, but DH still won’t believe me that that was why. He says my way just doesn’t make sense.

What would you do? Is this the hill I need to die on?

Air coming cools the house 😂😂 does he mean the 34 C hot air outside while it’s 25 C inside? How does this cool air effect work exactly?

He can air the house in the evening when it’s cooler, not when it’s an oven outside

Lots of people are commenting that they open the window for fresh air.
Do you feel the fresh air during the day when its hot?? Its stifling when i open my windows during the day when its hot.

I usually have my windows open all year round because central heating gives me a headache I actually use the car air con quite a lot in winter too... menopause is going to be brutal for me!

In hot weather I have all curtains/blinds and windows closed during the day and open the windows late evening then shut them when we get up around 6.30 pm.

It’s the same kind of fresh air you get when you open the oven to check on your roast 😂

It's been 31 today, windows and door open, 27 inside so fine for us, maybe might be too hot for some though. I won't bother with the portable air con downstairs but will probably put bedroom one on as its probably a bit hotter there.

I've kept the front room patio doors and windows shut with curtains closed - we have blackout ones. Fans on and it's really quite cool compared to the 32 degrees heat outside.

backformoreofthesame · 23/06/2026 18:04

30 outside
24 inside

blackout blinds drawn all day , windows closed of course

will open as many windows as possible when it’s cooler outside

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/06/2026 18:08

According to the BBC it ought to be a tolerable 21 degrees here at 5am tomorrow morning, falling gradually from 27 degrees just after sunset. Maybe you need to wait until you go to bed before opening the windows tonight.

Update: I came home and most of the house was nice and cool (apart from the conservatory, which currently doesn’t have blinds or curtains).

Then DH came home and opened all the doors. I could physically feel the heat coming in. But he’s refusing to close them.

what an idiot 😂

Fizbosshoes · 24/06/2026 13:34

I got home at 11.30pm last night after sweltering at Wembley stadium, no downstairs windows or doors were open, 1 (of 2) windows in our bedroom was open....but the blind closed. 1 of 2 windows at the front was open but curtains closed. DS had both windows in his room open and curtains open.
Ive no idea what strategy they were using but it was not cool in the house 😫

ThatLassFromLeeds · 24/06/2026 16:37

I left the house first this morning and just got home… all curtains open, windows open and the place is BOILING. Argh!

I think this is becoming a LTB situation. It's either that or you may come home and find he has done it again, and, in a fit of total exasperation, decapitate him with a handy axe.

I’m hoping that this at least demonstrates that I am right and he is wrong.

I can't help feeling that the important thing to you really is that he can believe whatever the frod he wants so long as he doesn't cause the entire house to reach inhumane high temperatures because of his belief.

It's his belief causing you (and him!) harm that's the sticking point really.

Ive just shared the red cross link on our family chat....DH probably wont read it.

In most situations he is extremely practically minded but keeping the house warm or cold and hanging washing out properly is a blind spot. He doesnt believe me when I suggest drawing the curtains keeps the heat in, in the winter either .....

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/06/2026 17:27

Mine has the sense God promised a parsnip in the beginning, kept windows closed and curtains drawn all day starting when the temperature outside got higher than that indoors, and has retired to a lukewarm bath, taking his laptop with him.

Unfortunately we only have one bath and it isn't large enough for two, so I can't do the same. Curses that he thought of it first!

Let me guess: he tells you that cold doesn't radiate?

I lived in Spain everything closed and curtains/ blinds in day. When it cools open everything.
