What to do with dc3 and baby 8 months in today’s heat

We went to a stay and play this morning.. Now roasting at home. Do we pop out? I can’t think of anywhere sensible to go! Suggestions? I am knackered myself too due to the heat. Am I ok to lower expectations and stay in (this would involve screen time). Dc3 has also been unwell and isn’t fully better - at that awkward stage of not horrifically unwell but still not fully better

Woods? Especially if there's a shallow stream to throw stones in. Or beach/lido. Or the supermarket as it airconned.

When my kids were that age I’d set up a little splash pool in the shade in the backyard (at one point we got a proper one but before that it was just a large bucket!). I’d give them little cups and sponges and they’d have fun getting wet and making splashes, while I read a book.

Shopping centre/restaurant/park/garden with splash pool or get them down for naps during the hottest part of the day.

Anything that involves water! Paddling pool if you have one in the shade (or order on Amazon etc for using the rest of the week). If no paddling pool then a bucket or as large a container that you have, then a variety of smaller containers so toddler can dip and tip water and given the heat it’s fine if they get it over themselves.

Or a hose and sprinkler to run under; get them in a cool-ish bath with toys and you prepared to get wet too.

Why is this so complicated? Paddling pool in shade? Park visit later on?

😂I mean I’m probably not going to take my dc to the park when she’s been unwell. Also not everyone in the UK has a garden and I’m probably not lugging a paddling pool and a hose to the nearest park? Thanks for your input anyway

Why on earth did you take your kid to stay and play if their ill. Stay home fans on curtains closed put toy story on and make snacks

Visiblyabove25 · 23/06/2026 11:08

I definitely think it’s fine to lower your expectations and have a day in!

@GetAFurqingCompass and @youalright read the OP. I do remember why I try and refrain from posting on here now 🤯

Stay home, screen time, cool bath play?

Pansypots · 23/06/2026 12:35

Local library? Mine was freezing this morning!

GetAFurqingCompass · 23/06/2026 12:35

I did read the OP.

You said "We went to a stay and play this morning [...] Dc3 has also been unwell and isn’t fully better - at that awkward stage of not horrifically unwell but still not fully better"

So you've got a child who has been unwell and isn't fully better, but was well enough to take to a stay and play earlier in the day.

You then went on to say, to someone who suggested a trip to the park, " 😂 I mean I’m probably not going to take my dc to the park when she’s been unwell"

You did ask for suggestions, and the park is a totally reasonable suggestion for a child who is well enough for a stay and play session. Why is stay and play fine, but the park apparently a laughable idea?

ThejoyofNC · 23/06/2026 12:38

I wouldn't be taking an 8 month old anywhere in these temperatures. Stay at home and keep it as cool as you can. If nowhere for a paddling pool you can always let them play in a cool bath.

SummerInSun · 23/06/2026 12:43

Movie theatre if you can find anything kid appropriate to watch - they are always freezing. Or a shopping mall if there is an air conditioned one nearby eg a Westfield. Or if in doubt, out for an ice cream. Better still, if you have any of those plastic moulds for
making ice lollies with fruit juice, do that.

GoFigure235 · 23/06/2026 13:48

Run a cool bath with some bath toys.

NuffSaidSam · 23/06/2026 13:53

I think this afternoon is screaming out for some water play. If you don't have a garden/outside space then use the bath.

But also, yes, a bit of screen time on an unusually hot afternoon is fine!

(If your DC is too ill for the park, they shouldn't be at stay and play).
