Can schools issue fines for absence during very hot weather?

I’m planning to keep my dc off tue/wed/thu due to the heat - can schools actually fine for this ? Or is it only for holidays that they do this ? Or do you have to have at least 10 unauthorised sessions ?

You'll be surprised at the lengths primary schools will be going to this week.

All the precautions I have listed are happening.

This needs the laughing emoji back!

None of the precautions you listed are happening in my school or any in the local area or any that people I've previously worked with are now at. We have no chilled water, there is no extra shade items to erect 🤣 I love how you're so confident this is happening in lots of schools, especially when many on here are telling you it isn't at their/their kids schools.

well if you and your children have both conditions i am amazed you are not better educated about the risks .

I was stating that Monday was hot enough for it to be a trigger, so why would these next few days be any different? At this point, regardless of it being 31C or 39C, both can exacerbate asthma/eczema if that is her DC triggers. Surely they would have been off school on Monday too?

I also had a post prior to this stating that they would be cooler at home and OP knows her DC health conditions best.

However, as the high temps are becoming more common, then OP does need to try and get an appropriate health mamagement plan in place. They wont be at home every time its hot.

@AliceMcK I know it's personal but can I ask which suncream your child with eczema can tolerate? We're still struggling to find anything that doesn't sting or burn.

Hi, it’s this CeraVe one. Her eczema is far more under control than it as a couple of years ago so I’m not sure if that’s a factor.

Chilled water machines are available every day so the children can fill their water bottles up.

Your concern that classrooms dont even have sinks just isn't correct.

2 extra gazebo shades have been erected. The school (or the PTA) purchased them a few years ago.

At my grandchilds school sports day last week I noticed they had a massive gazebo.

I imagine (and hope) schools are much better prepared than you assume.

Nevertheless some parents will be concerned and if they feel their children should stay at home that's their right.

What school is it? Why aren't you telling me?

Wow some of these comments.

i like to point out the summer of 1976 was a dry summer, hardly any humidity. Temperatures didn't exceed 35c. No double glazing or insulation and 1000s died, so yes it was bad but this heatwave maybe shorter but hotter and humidity is over 70% making it feel even hotter. double glazing and insulation hold the heat in buildings. More importantly we should learn from 1976. Why in 2026 do we want 1000s dying from the heat related complications? Surely we have learnt.

regarding schools, I wouldn't allow mine in, I mean they're grown up now but I wouldn't do it.
how can the government fine you for that when there is a red weather warning. It's a rare warning meaning danger to life. That's a warning for non vulnerable people.

for work places you can absolutely refuse to go to work and you're protected by the law. This should extend to children in school as children are more vulnerable compared to adults.

i haven't gone to work. I am vulnerable with a serious heart condition though. I think people should listen to rare weather warnings and do what you think is right for you and your family.

Blankscreen · 24/06/2026 16:23

Most schools don't have air con, hardly any fans and no cash to buy fans.

Although above 35 fans don't even work anyway.

The temp in my part of the UK (South east) definitely seems to have ramped up in the last 5 years. I'm 47 and I'm sure it used to start cooling down in the afternoon/evening.

Now the heat just seems to build and build all day.

Just sad that this is happening to our beautiful plant 😢

Rubyupbeat · 24/06/2026 16:31

Not really the answer, but if mine wete still at school, they would not be going in this week
The primary schools round here are shut tues, weds and Thurs this week.
