Anyone else's school shutting this week?

We just had an email saying they're shutting at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because of the heat. Seems fairly sensible to me.

Read this: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ukhsa-issues-red-heat-health-alerts-across-england

A red heat-health alert indicates that a severe heatwave could have impacts beyond health and social care with potential effects on transport systems, food, water, energy supplies and businesses, and indicates a risk to life for even the healthy population.

Let’s hope the unhealthy population can get the care they need and everyone isn’t off because it’s hot.

igelkott2026 · 22/06/2026 13:44

It may well be cooler outside than it is in the school, though.

And once you are home, you are home (although if you live in a new build flat, good luck with keeping cool).

As for going home and enjoying the weather, nobody will be enjoying it. There's hot and there's hot.

And if you do want to fry yourself, kindly desist. The rest of us don't want to be paying for your skin cancer treatment in a decade or so.

Are there any gcses or a levels scheduled for this week or are they all done?

Both are all done, the last exam was last Tuesday.

I'm currently at work, alone in a reasonably big room, and I still have three fans going. Pupils and students shouldn't have to cope crammed into small classroom with barely any ventilation.

I know people overseas are going to crow about the temperatures that they experience all the time but this is the precise point: the UK doesn't have temperatures like this all the time so it's a shock when they arrive.

nothingtoseehereatall · 22/06/2026 13:49

My DD has A level Mocks starting Wednesday ... not heard of any schools closing around here. Also SW London, though secondary not primary.

Given that schools generally don't have air conditioning nor blackout curtains it sounds sensible to me. What's your problem with it?

I work in healthcare. Would you be happy to have your appointment cancelled because my child's school has closed?

Bufftailed · 22/06/2026 13:51

Nothing yet. But this is becoming regular so a plan is needed

BringBackCatsEyes · 22/06/2026 13:51

My 17 yo is very happy 2 of his 3 A level options are in the rooms with aircon.

Viviennemary · 22/06/2026 13:52

I czn see why. Hot sweaty tired kids will be no fun to teach. But still leaves working parents with childminding to sort out while the teachers get a holiday.

This is a weird take. Obviously nobody would be happy to have their appointment cancelled. There are lots of reasons it might happen though- extreme weather is one (storms or heat), transport issues, fuel strikes, staff illness.

All those parents saying that their children will not be able to do any learning in this extreme heat.

I bet many of you will be fine letting them stay up until 11pm Tuesday night watching the football.

I’m not one of those parents (mine are big lumps) but it will be much cooler at 11pm so your argument is weak.

GingerBeverage · 22/06/2026 12:40

The heatwaves will keep happening, so assume the govt needs to start calculating the impact of closures on attainment.

Or fund air con or at least efficient fans.

It’s really not a weird take, it’s a very good point!

Rockgrin · 22/06/2026 13:56

I'm a bit bemused by the churlish adults I'm seeing in comments everywhere.

'Well I hope you are all happy to die waiting for healthcare, because if little Timmy doesn't go in to pass out and learn fuck all, then I don't want to work in a&e.'

'In my day (of temperatures and humidity levels that never reached this high) I wore my full suit of armour to walk 50 miles to school. My legs literally roasted in there and that is what I had for lunch, because we just got on with it back then, pussies.'

What exactly is the point they are trying to make? That children should suffer while gaining nothing (because no meaningful education is happening in the next couple of days) because otherwise it will make sad adults jealous?

Unorganisedchaos2 · 22/06/2026 13:56

I don’t think they’ll close but have said they can go in in PE kit, but DD’s summer dress is probably cooler.

It’s so hot though, one classroom reached over 40 degreees one day last year so they had to move them.

Weird how? Yes, appointments get cancelled for lots of reasons, so if we add school closures to the list the waiting times get even longer.

Bunnycat101 · 22/06/2026 13:58

The problem is people look at their own school and extrapolate to every school. My primary will stay open. It has access to extensive shady grounds so they can relocate the kids to shade outside if they need to. I can well believe that many schools can’t do that and therefore should close if the head determines their local conditions aren’t suitable.

I think we have reached a point where there should be national investment in retrofitting aircon units into schools. Individual schools are struggling for glue sticks so probably can’t get the money together to do it. I tend to send my kids to holiday camps at private schools as there tends to be air conditioning and pools and that is just much nicer.

Monvelo · 22/06/2026 13:58

The head said this morning they might do optional pick up at lunch time. No email on this yet. 40 degrees predicted here. The school library is in a conservatory, imagine what that's like!

Offherrockingchair · 22/06/2026 14:00

I don’t think they should, if they have aircon. But as we know, years of climate change denial and lack of investment renders school buildings unfit for purpose in our ever-warmer weather.

Passingthrough123 · 22/06/2026 14:00

I wish my partner's school would do the same. We're in London and I'm seriously concerned about him teaching this week. He's got fans, water bottles, school has no uniform policy anyway, but his class has a wall of windows and no blinds because it's a Victorian building.

noblegiraffe · 22/06/2026 14:01

A teacher getting a day off must be avoided at all costs, even if it’s horrible for the kids to be in school and they learn nothing.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 22/06/2026 14:01

LoudTealHare · 22/06/2026 13:35

why? So the teacher can go and enjoy the weather! I was at school in the 1976 heatwave and we just carried on! It’s ridiculous to close just because it’s hot, what about working parents with no notice of this!

I’m not sure that what you did in a heatwave that was cooler than this one is that relevant.

It's called parenting your own kids. HTH.

palran · 22/06/2026 14:04

Send the kids and teachers in at night I say! That'll help keep up the Blitz spirit and won't interfere with working parents childcare issues.

Thinking outside the greenhouse box here. 😊

Public exams have finished but lots of schools now do year 10 mocks…
