Work not taking red alert seriously

Founderflower · Yesterday 11:39

Why are some people not taking the red weather warning seriously? Where I am it’s 39 degrees on Wed/ Thur but ‘feels like’ 42 according to BBC.

At work they’re expecting everyone in - the office is air conditioned, so fine, but we’re central London so everyone needs to schlep in on public transport.

Red means a danger to life and not just for vulnerable people. Some people who are healthy will die because of the weather. There’s warnings of power outages and transport failures. So what happens if we get stuck on a broken down underground train?

I KNOW other countries see these temps regularly. But they are prepared for dealing with it. England is not and it fucks up. I don’t want a heart attack from sitting in 48 degree heat on a train. I’m really stressed out!

If it were a red warning around severe wind or rain or flooding they wouldn’t be telling everyone to come in! So why is heat seen differently?

The tube is not the same or cooler, it is hotter than the sun! If you haven’t been on a tube in a heatwave, you shouldn’t comment on the temperature

I mean that should be a MN directive - if you have no knowledge or experience of a subject don’t assert your opinion as fact.

Sadly it wouldn’t stop the idiots….

Why are you putting down people cycling on lime bikes? Can only people who have been cycling for 20 years and have their own bike be 'proper' cyclists?

If more people who have never cycled are encouraged to cycle isn't this a good thing?
Surely this is one of our ways out of climate disater?

Why be so judgemental about people trying to do the right thing?

At least 250million people on this thread insisted I should be cycling. Despite me not having been on a bike in 25 years and having vision problems. As well as being unfit. And it being a red alert heatwave!

Lots of the "it's just a bit warm" posters advising use of a fan. Public health agencies (like the UK Health Security Agency) advise against using electric fans when indoor temperatures exceed 35°C. At this point, a fan blows hot, dry air directly onto your skin, accelerating heat gain and increasing the risk of dehydration rather than cooling you down.

Son plucked his kids primary out of school. There were fainting and vomiting incidents yesterday. They were still in uniform.

Now bear in mind they've had no head since Christmas, two other staff have been absent since then. TAs valiantly trying to manage the classes so they thought blow it.

At 9am this morning they were paddle boarding in the sea. A friend has a caravan empty on the coast he offered them so they took it.

Between nine and ten AM a message from the school. Where are your children?

Well Ma'am whoever you are you've cancelled sports day today. You've cancelled the summer fair on Thursday because of the weather conditions so our children are "Living the dream". 🌊🌊🌊🐋🐬🐬

But if you give it a go you could be called a 'lime bike idiot', just for trying!

Well I cycle to work every day. in my lived experience, the people on Lime Bikes are downright dangerous. They turn without looking, they stop suddently and they overtake on narrow cycle ways. They aren't generally wearing helmets and they don't appear to be adhering to any of the rules of the road. on days like today and strike days, they grow in number and increase the risk to MY safety. So I am not being judgmental, I am reflecting the reality of having to share the road with them. And no, I'm sure there are some experienced cyclists who are on Lime Bikes at any given time. But most of them are not experienced, and many of them are not safe. Hope that helps.

Oof I would NOT want to be in a caravan in this weather! I was in one once at about 28 and it was like being in the depths of hell.

People who work in essential services face all sorts of difficult working conditions, incl extreme weather, danger at times. It goes withe territory. I am a doctor. It's ridiculous to insist those who can wfh go in. Glad OP's boss has seen sense

It's on a high headland above the beach the highest point for miles around used to be a castle there. There's a chalet attached. There's a garden so they could sleep outside. It's not on a caravan park. They'll be a damn site cooler than us. 😁

What the heck is a lime bike

They’re jump on jump off hire bikes dotted everywhere around London (and maybe elsewhere but not sure about that)

They are the publicly available electric bikes and scooters you can hire (1.70 for 20 minutes I think?) in London and a few other cities. You just download an app, do some basic training the first time you use, then off you go.

DDIL and DGC are over from southern Spain where it can often reach 40 degrees. They are struggling too in our heat. It is a different sort of heat and as other posters have mentioned we are not set up for it. There, the houses and buildings have marble or tiled floors and sometimes walls. They have shitters and sometimes air con. Schools start early and finish early. Some areas still have long closures in the afternoon and open late into the evening.
France seems to be struggling too with at least 40 heat related deaths so far.

PaperTyger · Today 14:55

@Dahliasrule I'm really glad they have shitters, without things would get very nasty fast!

Downatrack · Today 15:07

try working in healthcare in a uniform, on a ward or the usually packed emergency department with no A/C and we have to take public transport including the tube for a 12 hour shift. If you're that bothered, as previous posters stated, requested the rest of the week as annual leave.

ParcelDue · Today 15:09

If you can wfh then simple logic is insist you work from home, otherwise call in sick if you’re boss won’t allow it.
Try being a nurse/doctor/domestic/porter. I work for the NHS in a building with no air con, as do many others. There are no provisions for us, no pub drinks, not even a cold water dispenser other than a luke warm tap. We visit the vulnerable in the community in a car with no air con. I work 12.5 hr days and I am working on Thursday. Son’s nursery had also decided to close. It’ll be lots of fun for me and my colleagues!

I am working in a hospital in central London today. No aircon etc. Came on the tube. But it’s a job I want to do. And despite the heat etc, I would a million times rather be here, seeing patients than wfh on a Teams call about brand packaging. Wouldn’t you?!

Um no. Otherwise we’d all work in hospitals and there wouldn’t be shortages! But I’m glad you love your job!

No need. They’ve said we can all WFH in line with UKHSA guidelines. I’m currently eating a lolly in my air conned bedroom!

London Canon Street, but all the other London Terminals are having issues as well

No option for me to work from home and I won't get paid if I don't work. I'm 60 and work a zero hours nmw job in a warehouse doing physical work. There is no air conditioning, should be fun!

From which station in London?

The departure boards where I am looking are all totally fine. Not a single cancellation from Victoria or CharX, one or two trains running 3 minutes late that's all.
