Kitchen foil on windows in full sun

WindyMillerDrinksCider · 22/06/2026 11:16

I've put kitchen foil on the inside of double glazed windows at the front of the house to keep the heat out. It's really effective because they get full sun. However, Google says it can crack the glass because of the heat so it should be put on the outside.
Does anyone have experience of this either way - cracking or no cracking?

This is basically greenhouse shading wash, although the yogurt might be messier / go mouldy.

I don’t think there’s any “might be” about it!!

Cant find it now, but there was an article some years ago (Independent probably) about a massive row between neighbours because one neighbour put foil on their windows which worked brilliantly for them.....except it reflected it into the houses over the road. Think it may have been during the first lockdown.

So on that alone I would say it is a dick move. A new office block in our town had to change its mirror windows as it was blinding drivers.

My windows still are ok two days into
foil

Its comforting to me.
Its called planning, I didn't have any of it when we had 40 degrees years back so I made sure not to get caught out again.

It's called being smug.

Any thing on the outside that shades will work a lot better at keeping you cool than things inside.
I use old duvet cover on the patio door and some old towels on the windows on the back of my house that faces south east. The duvet I put over the top of the door and just close the door as far as it will go, then tie the handles together. Similarly all my windows fully open, so use the tilt to allow me to put a towel over and push it as closed as it will go.
I tried wetting the towels once, that seemed to work a bit, but they dried out so fast!

I was wondering about hanging damp towels from the curtain rail in my bedroom. I might give that a try.

My living room curtains have a thermal lining, and they seem to be quite effective at keeping the heat out, which surprised me. After all, they're meant for keeping heat in.

We used to put up very cheap bamboo roll up blinds when we lived in Germany, they are very effective at cooling a room by diffusing the sun. Similar to these: -

During the last heatwave a couple of years ago I hung the silver sun blinds that are made to use in the car on the French doors that face full South, again, very effective.

This is interesting re bamboo blinds. I often see them in homes in hot countries in films. I have one on my back door and usually have that door open with the blind down on warmer days. So it vents plus diffuses. I wondered if it was my imagination that it seemed cooler when I did that.

Same principle; a barrier.

We used foil before and it did crack, I think it was maybe after a year though.

How is having AC being smug.

Britneyfan · Yesterday 20:57

I Definitely wouldn’t use tinfoil but had wanted to order some reflective tinted window film some years ago for South facing windows in my lounge downstairs and bedroom upstairs. Then read about the glass potentially cracking and decided not to risk it as I live in an area that gets super hot in the South of England. I’d love to get shutters but the windows open outwards. I was thinking of getting an awning or something for the lounge which faces into a small front garden and the street. I think that would help a lot. But still to solve the issue of my bedroom upstairs, though I do have a portable air con unit which is amazingly efficient for one where you just stick the hose out of your window. Cools my room down by at least 10 degrees reliably compared to baseline. But I still feel a lot of heat comes through the windows so would love to find a solution. I do keep curtains closed already.

It isn’t. But saying that you are fine and dandy because xyz when others are feeling really uncomfortable in this weather. That’s smug.
But your air con is contributing to the overall problem so if I was you I’d feel ashamed tbh not be gloating about it.

Im saying im ok because i am.
But i was not going to get caught out in this heatwave like i was the last.
If that makes me smug for planning ahead so be it.

The smugness comes from having the ability to drop at least 2k (and probably more) on something you need about a fortnight a year, and the costs of running it.

"I'm alright Jack" is never a good look on anyone.

The thing is we all know it’s true that aircon contributes to climate change but I’m not certain what we should do instead. Maybe all new builds should have specifications for hotter weather, such as ceiling fans and external shutters. Doesn’t help the rest of us, though.

To be fair if there was ever a time to be a little bit smug at having had the foresight to get AC installed, it's now . Congratulations, I both admire and envy and hate you in equal measure😉. Is there any chance we can all come round and sleep at yours for the next few nights?

lol - How comforting for the OP to know that your house is a little chilly.
